I actually appreciated what he did in The Avengers. He managed to make Hawkeye feel like a substantial character despite the limitations placed on him by the script. In a lesser actor's hands, I think Hawkeye might have felt totally pointless. And his chemistry with ScarJo was great.
I still don't find him that attractive (nice butt notwithstanding) but I do find him very watchable as an actor. He made Tom Cruise look like a total cartoon, even more than usual, in MI4.

I wish we'd gotten more of him as Hawkeye, but there was enough of a tease there to make me want MORE in subsequent films. My mother, who knows nothing about the Avengers or Hawkeye, was worried about him. She really thought he wasn't going to make it. And don't get me started on him & Scarlett. I can't wait to see them on screen again, either as Avengers or some other project.
Now, I lust after Jeremy & have since S.W.A.T. & The Unusuals, but I understand he's an acquired taste look wise.

I still can't believe he was on The Unusuals. I watched that show for Adam Goldberg and Harold Perrineau, and I remember Renner's character but totally did not make the connection that it was him. Weird! My "Hey it's that guy" radar is breaking down lately.

Saw the trailer for the new "Bourne" movie and it looks like a terrible, awful mess. On top of that, I just don't get his appeal. He doesn't have the looks or charisma to be a leading man. He's like a poor man's Tom Cruise (circa 1990). Squashed pug-hobbit indeed. He can be funny but I cringed at all of his scenes in The Avengers and thought in MI:GP it was plain obvious he couldn't hold up a franchise. I'm at work, trying not to laugh at this, "squashed pug/Hobbit indeed." I like him, but I really don't think he's attractive at all. And how can they do a "Bourne" movie without Jason Bourne?

Matt didn't want to do it anymore. He & Paul Greengrass were burned out & not having fun according to his Comic-Con interview. He said he might come back if the script is right, but...he's pretty sure if this movie is successful, they won't want him back. I tend to agree. Why pay him $20M when they can have Jeremy at a lower price?
As for how can you have Bourne without Bourne, well, you sprinkle in enough mentions of him along with stock photos from previous films and viola. If there is a sequel to Renner's film, I think we'll get an off-mention of Bourne missing, but presumed alive with a pardon from the government.

I'm pretty sure they wrote a script for a 4th Bourne movie and Matt hated it. I seem to recall an interview where Matt trashed the script and I remember thinking he really doesn't want to do another Bourne movie.
I hope for Jeremy's sake it is successful. I know his character in MI4 was intended to take over the franchise but after how successful it was I doubt Tom will hand over the reigns anytime soon.

I finally watched the trilogy over the weekend and the last one was not nearly as good as the first two. It was chase after fight after chase with hardly a breather in between, which can be strangely boring. And the multiple car chases that Jason Bourne survived became annoyingly implausible, even for a high adrenaline action movie.
If the script Matt got was more of the same or worse I wouldn't blame him for ditching it. And from the trailer it looks like it's worse. Jeremy Renner has an extra chromosome or some such bullshit that makes him capable of surviving falls from buildings, etc. He's just your typical superhero/action star with none of the vulnerability that made Jason Bourne such an interesting character. That's what the trailer looks like anyway.

Agree on the third Bourne movie. I saw it in the theater and then in early '08 I was watching it with my mom who said, "Well, Matt Damon didn't have a lot of lines to learn." It was fight after car chase after fight. I almost thought I was watching "The Transporter."
This new one, with Renner looks silly, like someone messed with his DNA or something; but it's coming out in August so it'll probably be #1 at the box office since there probably will be nothing else to see that weekend.

I'm actually kind of excited to see his take on Bourne. I like Matt Damon and his Bourne kicked ass, but I actually think Renner is a better actor.

Huh. I thought the Bourne series was going the way of the Bond/007 series with different actors playing Bourne. So I learned something new from this thread.
I like Jeremy.
