I visited Last.fm for the first time in about 5 years mid-last year. I think I still may have had dial-up when I last used it, and at least had a really shitty, broken down PC so it wasn't much use to me at the time. I had even forgotten my old username.
There are a million groups on it asking to "Bring back the old Last.fm!"*. But it now appeals to the listmaker in me by introducing genres of music and artists I never would have pursued. The site I can relate it to the most are the old wwwthreads-era, pre-trolls IMDb message boards circa 1999-2000, in the time when there was still a search function on the boards, and before individual movie and actor forum existed. It made me discover the classic and foreign movies I was always curious about at the same time as I started uni, which was the first time had access to a massive AV library. In the same way, Last.fm has made me more interested in music in any time since I was a teen recording songs of the radio and dubbing mix-tapes. Best of all is that I've probably averaged 3 gigs per month since using it religiously.
And I've been more scrupulous about tagging my mp3s.
*Most of the complaints are regarding diminished features. Whilst that is annoying, I can't access so many competing media sites in Australia like Hulu, Spotify and Lala, so I have to take what I can get. Probably the worst thing about the "new" last.fm the weirdly huge numbers of white pride teens and early-20-somethings from former Eastern Bloc countries. They seem to have popped in their thousands since I last used the site in a way that beggars belief.
