I was wondering about that. That is really sad, unfortunately for a lot of people lung cancer isn't detected until about the third or fourth stage; and by then it is usually too late. TV news will never be the same. I don't see any of the newcomers comparing to someone like Jennings.

He really was the best of the "Big 3" anchors by far. Oh, I had such a crush on his handsome self back in the mid-late 70s! He radiated calm intelligence and humor. Smart is sexy, indeed, and the hint of a Canadian accent made him seem even more articulate, to my mid-Atlantic ears. I'm very sad, especially since I lost a friend to lung cancer a few months ago. Bon voyage, Peter.

My Dad died of lung cancer last year, it is shocking how fast it moves in the body...when I heard of Peter's diagnosis in April, I was hoping for the best, because some people can beat it. All I can think to say is that he is out of his pain, which I know was a relief to myself and my family after my Dad's passing. Home hospice workers helped us the week he died, they are true angels on this planet.
If I had the energy today I'd do a major rant against cigarette maufacturers (we are pretty sure that's how my Dad got it, even though he quit 10 years before his diagnosis), but I'm just too sad knowing that another life was snuffed out too early.

My reaction to this news was the same to Jerry Orbach's death: It's not fair! He was supposed to get better!

karin - (off topic) Word to your post. I feel the same way. Given the evidence on cigarettes we have today, I doubt the FDA would even approve them for sale. A co-worker of mine died last week from throat cancer, a lifelong smoker. I never saw Kenny without a cigarette in one hand and a coffee in another. Throat cancer is similar to lung cancer it seems - once it's detected, you're pretty much in the last stages of it. Such a waste. (/Way off topic)

Yes it's sad that Peter Jennings has died. But nobody forced him to smoke, and by now everyone knows how unhealthy smoking is. I am sure Jennings had a rich full life and appreciated every minute of it.

Rest in peace, Peter. A smart, charismatic dynamic newscaster. Too bad he could not see the dangers of smoking. (I won't get into how I hate breathing in second hand!) He was quite the womanizer I read.

Oh my God. I LOVE Peter Jennings. He's the only newscaster who can calm me down in times of crisis. He really did have that quality, did'nt he? Peter Jennings rocked.

Interesting that he was a high school dropout but maintained a lifelong love of learning and was probably smarter than most people with multiple degrees.
