The Whale.
So Brendan Fraser is good in it, but I hated this movie. Talk about misery porn--it actually reminded me of "Leaving Las Vegas" in that way. Also, this, from a Daily Beast review, nails it for me:

I saw Avatar: The Way of Water in IMAX 3D, and really liked it. The story has the basic war conflict like the first movie, but still introduces new creatures, people and environments. It's very, very long but right up my alley, so I didn't feel bored. It was a packed theater, people seemed satisfied, some applause, too. There are pretty, non-essential scenes at the beginning of the credits, but no extra scenes after that. I thought Sigourney Weaver especially did a great job. I enjoyed the movie overall, especially Sigourney’s character(s), but didn’t care for Jake Sully’s “a father’s job is to protect” line, which he says at least twice.

Yeah, I wish they would've shown more from Neytiri, but maybe in the next three sequels. Assuming it makes enough money to warrant them. I hear Cameron already completed filming for the third movie (the actors' performances, but probably not the effects).

I liked Avatar, but boy howdy did that story need work. Those kids were held captive how many times? It reeked off indulgence. But it was beautiful. I probably would have been more annoyed by the story problems but I was stoned so I just made mental notes.

My BFF and I went to see Black Panther 2 Dec. 29. Late to the game, yes. But I had been sick and busy most of November and this was the first chance we got. She made fun of me because I cried within the opening seconds of the movie- But it couldn't be helped (R.I.P Chadwick Boseman) I enjoyed it, though not nearly as much as the first movie- and the eye candy was popping as always. But I don't remember much about it a couple weeks later.
Maybe because the very next day for BFF's birthday we went to see Puss N Boots! That movie is AMAZING! The animation is over the top and the story is actually pretty deep. I boo-hoo'ed during this movie too, but for completely different reasons. The movie's already available for streaming on Prime for some reason, but if you get a chance to see it on the big screen, treat yourself! You don't have to have seen any of the Shrek or previous Puss N Boots movies to appreciate this one. It's beautiful and... Just Right!

You People on Netflix. Star-studded cast and some genuinely hilarious moments (Eddie Murphy and Julia Louis Dreyfuss steal the whole movie)…but also kinda of disappointing? It’s a lot to expect from a romantic comedy, but the premise was a Jewish/Black interracial relationship, and it felt like the reality of (and increasing) anti-semitism was hand waved for generic racial issues. Also, while Jonah Hill has grown into a better actor, he and Lauren London generated zero sexual tension.

Knock at the Cabin. You know, you'd think I'd learn by now that M.Night Shyamalan is going to disappoint me. So, shame on me, I guess.

Also, while Jonah Hill has grown into a better actor, he and Lauren London generated zero sexual tension. Yeah, Ezra and Amira didn't have a lot of chemistry. I was kind of rooting for Jonah Hill as a non-conventional romantic character but I don't think he pulled it off. And maybe it's because I'm a parent but I was TOTALLY on Eddie Murphy's side with regards to the Las Vegas stripper and cocaine-fueled bachelor party . Maybe the dad was a jerk for tagging along, but afterward I would've pulled my daughter aside and said "I think there's a lot you need to know about this guy and you shouldn't marry him." Same with Julia Louis Dreyfus, Ezra should've told his mom her behavior was unacceptable. But I guess if these characters behaved like normal, mature adults we wouldn't have had a movie. At the end of the movie I said "this is what people in Hollywood think family relationships are like." None of this stuff was normal or acceptable, right down to the surprise wedding! What if Amira and Ezra had decided they just didn't really want to get married? I guess it's a good sequence for a movie, but it's so far out of the realm of normal that I just rolled my eyes.

I saw Women Talking on Saturday. It was as good as the book! The choices made to differ from the book were very interesting and made a lot of sense. A good example was switching the narrators.

The Quiet Girl Oscar nommed Irish Language film it can be rented on AppleTV and wholeheartedly recommend it, it is a quiet little film it’s lovely and genuinely an real recognisable look for me into country living in Ireland in the 80s.
I didn’t expect many little details triggering memories, the furniture and carpets, rhubarb and gooseberries, card games with adults and of being packed off to cousins farm in the school holidays for company (only child) the opposite here for Cait tho. It’s subtitled but easy to follow and I’m pleased to say I recognised more Irish than I expected.
It’s up against it in the Oscars but the recognition at just being nominated is phenomenal It’s back in Irish cinemas and I think racked up 1million in box office here since the nominations were announced.
Also Aftersun with Paul Mescal again a quiet but brilliant bit of story telling, Paul as Callum is very good and deserves the nom tho for me it’s his young co star Frankie Corio who plays his daughter Sophie steals the film.
