So, I asked the mods if I could start a thread for movies that are currently playing, but don't seem to have made enough impact to warrant their own individual threads. As long as we use spoiler text, it's fine. Also, I figure it might be a good way for people to decide whether or not they're gonna go see something out now.
A week or so ago, I went to The Kingdom. I wasn't expecting to like it much, as I don't really enjoy Jamie Foxx or Jennifer Garner. It was an entertaining ride, and I'm becoming a big fan of director Peter Berg (also did one of my fave movies, The Rundown. He kept it light hearted and witty. Also, how often do you let your leading lady >>stab a guy in the balls? Given the topic, it really managed to be an entertaining action movie. Only part I didn't like was >> the end introduced a sudden morality play into my action movie without any believable set up.<<
What did you see at the movies?

I'm trying to force myself to pick my butt up off the couch after I get home at night and see some freaking new movies already as used to be my passion. I think 30 Days of Night will be my next new one, but thanks for the good review of The Kingdom, Binky.

In case anyone is wondering about "spoiler" text - it means changing the font color in your post to WHITE, so that people who are reading your post don't have to have their fun "spoiled" for them. Thanks.

Oh cool. I should've posted my Kingdom review here instead of in What Did You Rent.... Like binky, I really enjoyed Berg's direction and the ensemble team. Foxx, Garner, Bateman--everyone worked well together and were believable. People in my theater were hooting, clapping--and I swear I heard a coupla "Hoo-ahs!" from the back.
However, the end scene ALSO kicked me totally out of the movie; it felt rushed and tacked on, totally out of place (and pace) with the rest of the film. I came out of it wondering if it was even Berg's edit, or if someone had to do a quick re-edit at the end for some reason. It felt very movie-of-the-week.
So now that I've slaughtered the ending, let me go back and say all but 5 minutes of it is great; I recommend it for sure. I think Peter Berg may be one of my new cute/fug crushes.

I saw The Heartbreak Kid over the weekend. It wasn't as bad as I was expecting but it wasn't great either. There were quite a few funny parts but I felt it was boring in between. The friends I was with, however, thought it was hysterical throughout. I'm curious if anyone else has seen it and what they think about it.

I liked The Kingdom as well and was thrilled by the Friday Night Lights cameos, but why oh why is Kyle Chandler always blowing up real good? Its weird. /spoiler

I saw Dan In Real Life tonight. It's a gentle, comfort-food sort of movie and if you're in the right mood for it you'll enjoy it. I did except for Dane Cook, who is not an actor at all. In a small role, Emily Blunt steals scenes in her usual way.

I really want to see Dan In Real Life, thanks for the description. Is it more comedy or more drama?

Definitely a romcom. It's "serious" only if you compare it to the usual goofy over-the-top comedic roles that Steve Carrell plays. I still found it sweet and endearing.

Thanks. I wanted you to say drama, because I'm not sure I can convince my usual movie-going friend to go to a comedy. Sigh.
