I saw Things We Lost in the Fire tonight, and it made me a big ol' weepy mess. It was a little disjointed and there were some weird close ups, but overall I thought it was pretty good. Halle Berry didn't suck for once. Perhaps acting with Benicio Del Toro forced her to bring in her a-game.

I also saw Dan in Real Life last night. I would say the movie is a serious comedy--there are more funny moments than serious ones, but Steve Carrell really makes you feel for his character, and I did get vehrklempt (sp?) at one part about 2/3s into the movie. I liked the movie a lot (the 14 year olds in front of me who wouldn't shut up, less so).

Went to The Game Plan yesterday. Dwayne Johnson looked fabulous. You could tell he's been working out, mrrow! The interactions of the football players was better, to me, than the interactions with the kid. She was too over the top for my taste, and kind of smug/bratty. Of course that could have been how her character was written. I just went to see it for 'the rock' not for the kid. I wasn't disappointed with all the shirtless scenes! Seriously that man is a muscle-bound god!

I saw The Kingdom the other night, and I'm not really sure how to process it. On the one hand, it was a fairly entertaining action flick - but I didn't like how the movie tried to present itself as realistic, but had some huge wish-fulfillment plot twists (the scene where Fleury convinces the Saudi Prince to allow them investigative access was especially hard to swallow). The ending was reaaaally heavy-handed as well. Still, it was enjoyable and it's a pleasure to watch Chris Cooper in anything.
Plus, on a completely shallow note: I thought the actor playing Colonel Al Fhazi is very handsome.

The Kingdom ending...still shuddering over it. When I realized where it was leaning I was saying "don't don't don't doh!" I keep blaming a random editing assistant because it was so out of place. That actor was a hottie, agreed, viridian.

I just got back from seeing Lars And The Real Girl. Obviously, the whole idea of the movie lends itself to a lot of laughs, but it's actually very touching. The reasons behind Lars' relationship with Bianca just make you want to cry. And Ryan Gosling was fantastic. He really morphs himself into the character.

Before The Devil Knows You're Dead. Fantastic--seriously. Fantastic acting all around, great story, KILLER direction--I hope it's remembered at Oscar time.

I saw Rendition, which wasn't very good. The ending was way too tidy, Jake Gyllenhaal is too puppyish to play even a green Federal agent, and Reese Witherspoon was a little screechy. There's a good movie to be made about secret prisons/destruction of habeas corpus/torture conducted by the US govt - but this wasn't it.

Haven't seen it, but I've seen it advertised, and Reese looks like she screeches her way through the whole film. The bit where she screams "just tell me he's OK!" makes me laugh every time I see it, which isn't good news for a supposedly serious film.
