Next season should be interesting. This year's releases include: The Hobbit (Peter Jackson) The Dark Knight Rises (Chris Nolan) Anna Karenina (Joe Wright) Les Miserables (Tom Hooper) The Life of Pi (Ang Lee) Great Expectations (Mike Newell) Lincoln (Steven Spielberg, although I think that one's not yet confirmed for 2012?) The Great Gatsby (Baz Luhrman) There's a whole bunch of other films that might be released in time for awards season. I'm interested in what Kathryn Bigelow does with that bin Laden film that's supposed to be released in December. And whatever happens, the Academy will look really stupid if they overlook the new Batman film since they practically admitted that they decided to have ten BP noms after the whole Dark Knight disaster. Of course, it could be total shit and be quite rightly shut out It's still a long time but I'm already excited for many of these films to be released.

I would like to point out that I called The Artist's domination back in October. Do I win a prize? Preferably Jean's hand in Le Marriage?
And the "dull" categories gave some of the best speeches on Sunday, from mocking Angie's leg to the documentary guys being adorable and bleeped and the editing folks being genuinely shocked at winning. The speeches were fine. The presenters weren't terrible. It's the damn host and the awful, awful montages and pointless stuff. I said elsewhere that only a Crystal-led Oscars could produce an unfunny Christopher Guest movie. I understand that they kinda *have* to make it three hours for revenue but I think it would be better if those montages, etc. were instead devoted to, crazy thought, the year's actual nominees?
I am crazy intrigued by Bigelow's Bin Laden film but I'm not sure if she'll be recognized so soon after Hurt Locker for another war film. I think Day Lewis is probably a virtual lock as Lincoln but Leo has TWO high-profile awards bait-y films (the second being Tarantino's Django Unchained) so maybe it will finally be his year.
Others: Gangster Squad. Wettest Country. Pitt is reteaming with the Jesse James director for Cogan's Trade. Gosling and Refn are doing Only God Forgives.

This. They did two montages of clips from the Best Picture nominees last year and they were both great, particularly the one they opened the show with. I actually watched that one again online afterwards it was so good.

I think I may have cried at that one (it had the King's wartime Speech playing over the Toys from Toy Story 3 going into the incinerator, right?).

I think I may have cried at that one (it had the King's wartime Speech playing over the Toys from Toy Story 3 going into the incinerator, right?). That was the second montage, the one they showed before announcing the winner. The opening montage used the music from the Henley scene from The Social Network. ETA: Found it!

That is cut together very well. I don't know who the editors were this year but they blew. (The 'appearing in the movies' bit was also better with Anne and Franco last year. They did something a bit different with it versus Crystal's done to death bit).
I know he's not the most well-liked person around here, but I have to give Woody Allen credit for never showing up to receive his multiple Oscars It's easy to proclaim that you don't really care about getting an award while still showing up to claim it (Bon Iver, Meryl, etc.). Actually not caring enough to show up is rare.

I've seen Silver Linings Playbook twice now (free both times, yay). And I gotta say, while Jennifer Lawrence was good, I cannot believe the Oscar hype. She was good, but I didn't think she was great or fabulous. That being said, this is just the kind of movie the academy likes, so I expect it to get a ton of nominations, and a few wins unless it gets steamrolled by Lincoln or a similar project.

The Oscar buzz for this one is huge according to awards sites. I've only seen one trailer quite some time ago and I haven't read the book; couldn't figure out what it's supposed to be: a feel-good movie about people with mental illness involving the manic pixie dream girl coming to rescue the lead character? Anyway, the Academy seems to award feel-good movies lately. Minus The Hurt Locker, the past few BP winners were Slumdog Millionaire, The King's Speech and The Artist. So yeah, who knows, this could be this year's big winner.

I'm excited for it if only to see Deniro in a decent movie again.

I'm really resisting the urge to believe Jessica Chastain could get in the best actress race but it'll just crush my hopes more when Sally Field wins.
