I adore Chastain but I think she's going to have a thousand chances over the years.
Also, I think it's CRAZY ODD that the trailer for 'Zero Dark Thirty' has everybody else talking about how awesome/bad-ass her character is but she never speaks a single line of dialogue.
Based on buzz, I think the actress races are a lock between Lawrence and Hathaway for supporting (which, the Academy tends to skew younger in terms of awarding actresses) - I'd say DDL is a lock after Joaquin's "awards season is bullshit and I don't give a fuck about winning again" quotes. Supporting actor is anyone's game. I think this may be a year where we see a director/picture split.

Given that the movie is about the Seals taking out Bin Laden I have a hard time seeing her role being that meaty of important. I could be wrong but she hasn't jumped out at me in the trailer.
I don't know if I could see the Academy awarding 2 young actresses. I could see one of them getting it but not both. I could see the Academy awarding say Sally Field or maybe Helen Mirren.

I believe Sally Field is going into the Best Supporting Actress category for Lincoln. I actually like Anne Hathaway but I will laugh and laugh if Sally Field wins her 3rd Oscar over her. Speaking of which, The Hollywood Reporter has its Actresses roundtable interview up already. Anne Hathaway, Amy Adams, Sally Field, Naomi Watts, Rachel Weisz, Helen Hunt and Marion Cotillard. Anne and Sally dominate the conversation and poor Naomi's voice is shot to hell. I'm not sure what Rachel Weisz is doing there as her only movie this year was The Bourne Legacy, unless she's in very early promotions for Oz: The Great and Powerful. Link. It's over an hour long but quite interesting.

Apparently Chastain plays a woman who spent ten years tracking down Bin Laden. I hope it does turn out to be a well-written lead role, because it feels like this has been a poor year for actresses in mainstream/prestige Hollywood films. The Best Actress contenders include a girl who's around 8-9 years old and two French performances, one of Mirren/Dench/Smith might get a filler nomination for a forgettable movie, and now people are talking about Naomi Watts getting nominated for a tsunami movie. Rachel Weisz did The Deep Blue Sea, but the film seems a little too obscure even in a weak year like this.
I don't think Sally "you like me!" Field is respected enough to get her third Oscar for her third nomination (a perfect record) with the supremely baity Hathaway and Oscarless Adams in her category, but if Lincoln does well DDL the Best Living Actor just might have his third handed to him by Meryl.

I believe in the Seal Team Six movie that was on the National Geographic Channel, this role was played by the woman who used to play Claire (Brandon's girlfriend) on 90210. It was not much of a role. She was a CIA wonk who spent 10 years behind a desk hoping to catch Bin Laden. Big deal. I understand Kathryn Bigelow's version of the story is probably going to be more sophisticated, but I can't envision that part being anything remotely award worthy.

I wasn't terribly blown away by Sally Field in Lincoln. I found her a bit too much on the scenery chewing side and a little stuck on hysterical. Good but not great.
DDL on the other hand was beyond brilliant. I think he's a lock for the win. Given that, I don't really see them handing out a 3rd statue to two different people so I think the odds will be against Field.

Karen - is it Beasts of the Southern Wild you are referring to when you mention a performance by a young girl? I read that the movie will be in eligible for SAG and likely Oscar because the movie wasn't made adhering to some low budget feature agreement which mandates the use of professional actors. They used locals instead of professional actors.
The names I am hearing consistently for lead actress are Jennifer Lawrence, Marion Cotillard and Naomi Watts. I did see The Deep Blue Sea last year at the Toronto Film Fest in 2011 and hated it. Maybe they are going to try a limited release and push her for consideration.
