I wish the Oscars had a best ensemble or best cast award. Sometimes an individual doesn't stand out that much, but the sum of the whole is amazing.I also like the awards for the acting equivalent of Rookie of the Year. Basically the Tarantino/Soderbergh award. Adding something like that would be an excellent idea and give the Oscars a badly needed new dynamic. The Rookie of the Year idea is fantastic as well. The MTV Movie Awards built up a ton of hip buzz via their unconventional but very astute "Breakthrough Performance" style awards in the early 90's. In their heyday, they had more street cred than the Oscars.

I saw Silver Linings Playbook and think there's no way Jennifer Lawrence wins Best Actress for that. Right now I'm predicting Jessica Chastain--Zero Dark Thirty has garnered very strong reviews, Jessica's older than Jennifer and the role sounds weighty enough to be deemed "worthy" of winning a lead actor Oscar.

There is a lot of buzz about Jessica but from everything I've seen about ZDT it's more of an ensemble piece and I have a hard time picturing her role as little more than sitting at a desk with her brow furrowed and exclaiming where is Bin Laden! I could be wrong. I really want to see it but from the little I've read I think she's getting lots of attention but I suspect her part is really more of a supporting nature.

Wow, the acting awards are all over the place. No obvious winners this year. I like the notion of a runner-up, although I'm not sure if there's any point to doing that with the Oscars. Would they get a silver statuette?
I also like an actor winning for more than one performance - if they've had two or three very good performances in a year, it could trump one lone exceptional performance.

Thanks mochakitty for bringing over the critics results I try to stay away from awardsdaily these days (my usual source during awards season) because the site owner went basically crazy when it was clear the The King's Speech would win two years ago so I can only imagine her rage at Les Mis' buzz And yeah, it's cool to see the wealth being spread for actors this year, let's hope the bigger awards can keep the suspense up right until the Oscars. ETA: Critics Choice, SAG and GG noms will be announced this week! ETA: What's up with that Naomi Watts film? I'm pissed off about that movie without having seen it. I don't know about other countries but there've been several German films these past few years that focus on Tsunami survivors without ever mentioning the local population. I've had quite enough of that. And that film has been getting so much praise now...

Awards Daily worked out who got nominated before the announcement thanks to a SAG site glitch. The Oscars and the Golden Globes are probably doubling up to make sure that doesn't happen ahead of their nominations.
Melissa McCarthy got an Oscar nod for playing someone who took a dump in a sink but that wasn't totally surprising, people actually saw Bridesmaids.
Is Javier for Skyfall actually going to happen? As Bond villains go he was entertaining enough, the opening monologue was nice, but really? I feel like he'd only get the Oscar nomination because he's Javier Bardem and not because the performance was that amazing. Ditto Alan Arkin for Argo.

I thought Bardem was good, but certainly not Oscar-worthy. IMO both Judi Dench and Daniel Craig were better in Skyfall. I know Craig is not happening, since the field is crowded and no one ever got a nom for playing James Bond, and I'm okay with that. And I do think you could make an argument that Dench's performance warrants a nomination. But Bardem's really doesn't. The character wasn't written well enough for that and what he did with it was very good and entertaining, but certainly not amazing. When you compare it to Ledger's Joker, for example, it's really not in the same ballpark at all IMO.
