Battleship was entertaining in a big dumb summer movie kind if of way. You know shit gets blown up and aliens try to invade earth...

Battleship wasn't that bad. Slow in the beginning. Entertaining when stuff started blowing up.

So some surprises for sure in the noms. No best director nom for Affleck or Bigelow. I'm more surprised about the latter. Much love for Armour and Beasts of the Southern Wild. Joaquin managed to sneak back in. 9 noms for best picture.

Man, all those cute family photo-ops for nothing?!? I'm also more surprised about Bigelow. That seems like a deliberate snub.
I'm kind of glad Joaquin managed a nomination and I would've never imagined 5 years ago that guy from Alias would be nominated for an Oscar. Hard work and ambition does pay off. Good job, Coop.

I'm psyched for Bradley Cooper, but moreso for DeNiro. He was really good in SLP and it seemed like he wasn't going to get any recognition for it.
And Seth Macfarlane is also an Oscar nominee, for a song from Ted. He's having a pretty good year.
I'm surprised about the Bigelow snub too, though I don't know who got her spot. I'm happy Ang Lee got nominated and Life of Pi got in for Best Picture.
I did pretty good on Oscar bait movies this year. All I have to catch up on are Amour, Beasts of the Southern Wild, and The Sessions. So I will unfortunately have to subject myself to Helen Hunt. Ugh.

I just watched that the other day and found it to be one of those deliberately pretentious films that's not very good but everyone loves because it's "artsy". And an actress nomination for Quvenzhané Wallis is bullshit. She didn't do anything but stomp around with a pouty face and act like a brat.

I'm stunned that Bigelow was snubbed. I guess Spielberg is a lock for Director unless there's a surprise. Which is too bad, because I loved Lincoln for the script and the acting, but the direction wasn't anything spectacular.

My brain is trying to process the fact Will Tippin is an Oscar nominee!

I don't understand why the industry continually refuses to recognize Tarantino's directing. I haven't seen Django yet, but I have a hard time believing that it was a great in so many different areas (Best Picture, acting, screenplay, cinematography, etc.) but the direction was sub-par.
I've never been to a Tarantino film where I thought the movie was let down by the direction. Just the opposite. Even when I don't like the film, I can still see that Tarantino's got mad directing skillz. What's the deal?
