Four acting noms for SIlver Linings Playbook, wow. And apparently the Academy did like The Master, they've got three acting nominees. And they totally went for the oldest/youngest nominee thing in Best Actress! Riva, Wallis and Bradley Cooper are the only first time nominees among the 20 actors nominated this year. I don't think any of these three stands a chance though. I doubt that Cooper will AdrienBrody himself that statue, it's DDL's all the way. ETA: Jackman is a first-time nominee as well.
I'm sad for Bigelow's snub but kinda glad that Hooper wasn't nominated either. His win for The King's Speech was so unjustified IMHO and from what I hear it's not stellar in Les Mis either.

I just read an article where they are calling Tom Hooper not being nominated for Best Director for Les Miserables, a snub. Really? I'm pretty sure I could have directed that thing better...in the third grade.
SO happy about Joaquin. I was wondering why only Phillip Seymour Hoffman was getting the love. Also thrilled for Bradley Cooper and Naomi Watts.

While I'm a bit annoyed about Bigelow and Affleck being snubbed, I can at least be happy that Tom Hooper didn't get nominated. The direction was the worst part of Les Mis. I'd love for Ang Lee to win it again but I have a feeling they'll give it to Spielberg.

I love the nom for Joaquin. I know he's crazy and all but for some reason I still have a soft spot for him. I'd also love it if he just didn't show up.

Yeah, Hooper's directing was panned quite a bit. I don't get the confusion here.
I hope they stay away from the "waiting their turn" thing. That's one of the things that really annoys me the most about the Oscars. And then you get "make up Oscars" later on that skew everything again. Particularly in the Best Actor category it's really annoying IMO.
Al Pacino losing out for The Godfather, then winning it for Scent of a Woman. Russel Crowe not getting it for The Insider and then IMO winning for weaker work in The Gladiator. Paul Newman winning for solid but unremarkable work in The Color of Money when he had about a dozen outstanding performances throughout the years that would have been worthier. Humphrey Bogart getting it for African Queen. And so on...
I think it's gotten a bit better in the last few years, but still.

Silver Linings Playbook must play REALLY well on a TV screen. I just didn't think that much of it, outside Cooper and DeNiro. And Jackie Weaver?!?! For watching other people talk?!?! No nominations at all for The Dark Knight Rises, ironicalish since they supposedly opened Best Picture up to support movies like it. Very happy for Cooper and Jackman's nominations, not happy for Affleck and Bigelow's snubs (and I haven't even seen Zero Dark Thirty) That smacks of sexism. Mugsy, I agree on Lee winning for Directing. He'll deserve it again. Poor Ann Dowd. I haven't seen Compliance but the original point of Supporting Awards was for character actors like her. Still, it got her name out there for other work. I watched it live, and Seth MacFarlane was pretty funny for 5 o'clock in the morning. P.S. The Critic's Choice Awards are tonight on The CW.

Have there been more directing snubs since they opened up best picture for more nominees? It would make sense that more directors would get edged out with more pictures getting attention. Even so, the Bigelow snub is pretty glaring.
I wonder if Amy Adams will be the surprise of the night given the nominations for "The Master".

The Bigelow snub really sucks. Haven't seen Affleck's movie yet but I heard a lot of good things about it. I expected him to get nominated. I'm guessing Lincoln will clean up at the awards. DDL was great as always, but I thought the movies itself was rather dull. I'd vote for Zero Dark Thirty.

2004 was the last year that the Critics Choice got every acting award correct with Oscar, so tonight's winners won't start setting the stones. This year's list. Go Tom Holland! Also was really rooting for McConaughey to get nommed for Magic Mike. Alas, male sexuality is still icky to the Academy, which might also explain why Helen Hunt is in and John Hawkes is out too. Bananarama must be thrilled!
