All the entertainment writers agree that the Affleck and Bigelow snubs were huge. Those were two names that I think everyone was expecting on the ballot.

There are a couple of individual nominations I'm happy about (Denzel Washington, Joaquin Phoenix, Ang Lee), but on the whole I'm weirdly unenthused. The category I'm most excited to see who wins is, of all things, Best Animated Feature. Brave, Wreck-It Ralph and ParaNorman are a good crop of movies.

Favourite franchise this year or of all time?
I think the Oscars this year are going to be really good - it seems the awards are going to be unpredictable for once, and I think Seth McFarlane is going to be a fantastic host.
Again, I wish there were Oscars for Best Young Performer, and for Best Cast Ensemble. It would simplify a lot of voting challenges.
Also, why did they change the number of films to be able to go up to 10, but all the categories have to have 5 nominees? Why not, in a good year, have 7 Best Actor nominees? Or, in a bad year (which might send a message), have only 3 Best Actress noms?

Of all time, Mugsy, of all time. Teenagers are stupid.

I just want Quvenzhané Wallis to win, although my guess is that she doesn't have a prayer. Barring her, then Emmanuelle Riva. If not Riva, then Jessica Chastain.
A big no on Naomi Watts or Jennifer Lawrence. So of course one of those two will win, knowing my luck.

A big huge no on Lawrence and Watts. Although I must admit that I have not seen The Impossible, have no desire to see it, and don't plan on seeing it. So I have no clue what type of performance Watts gave.

I haven't seen Amour or Beasts of the Southern Wild yet, so I can't speak to Riva or Wallis' performances. Of the three performances I have seen so far I'd rank them thusly from best to worst: Chastain, Lawrence, and Watts.
I've never been impressed by Naomi Watts and The Impossible did nothing to change that. For much of the movie she's just lying down, looking deathly ill, and mumbling unintelligibly. I could only understand maybe a third of her dialog post-tsunami scene. The make-up team deserves far more credit for her performance than she does, they made her look awful.
Now the kid who plays her oldest son on the other hand, he was really good. He did the heavy lifting in his scenes with Watts and it's a shame he's not getting any recognition for it.

I watched Beasts of the Southern Wild last night and now I have mad love for Hushpuppy and Q Wallis. The movie and her performance in it were so touching, I want her to get that Oscar because her acceptance speech would be adorable. In reality, there's 0.00001 zero chance of that happening. As to the other four, I have yet to see the rest of the movies but from what I've seen of them, Jessica Chastain to me is a better actress than Jlaw. JLaw has potential, sure, she can be very good even when the movie is mediocre, but I don't think she's reached the type of maturity to give gravitas to her roles. That Oscar will be hers some day, but it may be a little premature to give it to her now. There is someone on twitter with the handle of Michael_Haneke who is cracking me up. I don't think that's the real Haneke, but it seems like he may have some celebrities fooled like Ellen Page & Russell Crowe who twitted back.

Why? WHY? ? (Warning: rant ahead!) I can't stand HH, and would like to reiterate my longstanding assertion that her Oscar for As Good As It Gets should be taken from her and given to any of the other four actresses who were in the nomination pool that year. (Helen Hunt beats out Judi Dench NEVER in my book! Judi Dench has more talent, charisma, and screen presence in her ring finger than Helen Hunt has in her whole body.) From what I've seen of Hunt's performance in that movie, she fit the part and did a good job, but I could also think of about 5 other actresses who could have done just as well or better than she did! My point being, she was nothing special! And she's pretty much the only thing nominated from The Sessions?! Bah. HH must have one helluva for-your-consideration campaign team is all I can say.
