Argo IMO does have some advantages: it presents a story where Hollywood/the movie business saves the day in some respect, and voters will probably love that. Another advantage is that it's about real events in the Middle East, so voters can feel like they're backing something "important", but the presentation is slicker than Zero Dark Thirty's and without the pesky torture controversies, or the "weighty history lesson" feel of Lincoln (I thought it had a lot of humor but you know it's going to be a history class staple for years to come). Ben missing in Director (I don't think it was a Nolan-esque snub so much as it being a tough field and a lot of Academy members probably thinking he was a shoo-in who didn't need their votes) only helped its Best Picture chances.

George Clooney is going to be even more smug then because then he'll have two Oscars.

Having seen both I would rate ZDT ahead of Argo. The torture controversy may derail Zero but then again Argo did take huge liberties with the actual events. I really liked SLP by don't know if it screams Oscar. As I have yet to see Lincoln I can't say what it's chances are but it strikes me as the type of movie the Academy loves. I did think Pi was stunning and fantastically shot. I really though Ang Lee did a terrific job.

Honestly, I think Hollywood doesn't give a crap about what liberties are taken. My gut tells me they could easily see ZDT as being all, "Hooray Torture!" and reject that film because it isn't PC enough because of the torture thing. But I know nothing about Hollywood.

Argo won at the PGAs. It's getting to the point where I would be surprised if it didn't win Best Picture.

It's so weird that it might win best picture and Affleck wasn't even nominated for best director. I wonder if Argo is popular enough to push Arkin to a Best Supporting Actor win as well.

It would be really weird to award Alan Arkin with an Oscar for this (I really enjoyed the movie, and thought he was great in it) because his part was so small. And his scenes were comic. Usually when the Oscar goes to someone with a small part (Judi Dench, Beatrice Straight) it's either to make up for a snub in a previous year, or to acknowledge a dramatic, iconic scene.
I wonder why he was nominated and not John Goodman or Bryan Cranston, if they're going to nominate someone from Argo. Those were bigger and more interesting parts. And John Goodman, especially, has had such an amazing career, spanning all sorts of genres, working with lots of different directors and I don't think he's ever been even nominated for an Oscar. Even last year, when The Artist was winning every award and he was the only big American name in it - nothing.
I can only assume it's snobbery for both him and Cranston, since they're both best known for their TV work. I hope that attitude changes soon because this field is ridiculous.
And I haven't seen Django, just clips, so I could be off, but why Christoph Waltz over Samuel L. Jackson (the only morally complex character in the movie) or even Leonardo DiCaprio (who, from what I can tell, got all the good lines). Especially Jackson - his movies have made more money at the box office than anyone else's. You know he's going to get an Oscar someday, probably for some boring eat-your-vegetables biopic where he plays Thurgood Marshall, so why not just do it now?

I totally agree. If they were going to nominate only one actor from Argo, it should've been John Goodman or Bryan Cranston.

I'm going on a limb and predicting Silver Linings Playbook to get Best Pic, just based on comments here, there and everywhere.
Lincoln will get the Best Actor award and that's it. Ang Lee will get Best Director. I think Zero Dark Thirty and Argo voters are the same types and will cancel each other out. There are just as many "Bigelow was robbed!" as "Affleck was robbed!" and the Academy voters aren't going to prove that the public was right (and they were wrong in their noms) by giving Argo Best Pic.
That's just my thought.

I love how unpredictable things still are. Aside from DDL and Anne Hathaway, anything can happen.
