Maybe there should be a voice work Oscar. Seriously. I could not agree more. And they need to come up with something so that Andy Serkis freaking gets his due already.

I'm surprised there is no buzz about Amy Adams being snubbed. I know she's white and people don't like her since she's mainstream now, but she did win the GG so not even being nominated seems odd to me. How does the Oscar nomination work exactly? Are all members given blank ballots that they can fill in with whatever movie/person they want and majority rules? Or are they given a list of suggestions? How many members are there? Do only actors nominate actors, screenwriters nominate screenwriters, etc? The comedy Globe was pretty much the only nomination Adams got for Big Eyes. She was still in the race because the year was dire for actresses in mainstream films (so dire that Aniston became a contender for an obscure film with 44% at Rotten Tomatoes and got bigger pre-Oscar nominations than Adams) and she's a five-time nominee so the Academy likes her. But in the end the 5th spot went to Cotillard, who'd received love from major critics awards, and Adams thankfully didn't get a lazy nom based purely on her name and the lack of options. Cotillard was probably helped by a passionate group of supporters that had her as #1 while Adams in Big Eyes seems like the kind of performance that gets listed as a #3-5 choice when the voter has to think about who else is out there after mentioning their favourites. A blog about voting:

I love Meryl but I don't understand her nomination for Into the Woods, which was not a good movie in my opinion.

I love Meryl but I don't understand her nomination for Into the Woods, which was not a good movie in my opinion. It's Meryl. All she has to do is show up on screen and she'll get nominated. So it looks like the major categories are all locked up. Since Boyhood was my favourite movie last year, I'm happy that it's the odd-on favourite for three major Oscars, but an awards ceremony with no surprises will be kinda boring, no? Will Win: Picture - Boyhood Director - Richard Linklater (Boyhood) Actor - Michael Keaton (Birdman) Actress - Julianne Moore (Still Alice) S. Actor - J.K. Simmons (Whiplash) S. Actress - Patricia Arquette (Boyhood)

Well, Michael Keaton has been giving some entertaining speeches lately so we'll have that to look forward to at least.

I agree, I think this is going to be a boring ceremony.

Cooper might surprise. It's his third nomination in a row and American Sniper looks like it's heading for a 75 million dollar weekend in January. It'll be by far the biggest nominated movie in a year of low-grossing nominees (this weekend alone it'll make more than the current #1 among the nominees).

I didn't see this before bumping up Cooper's thread, but I agree. I hope it's Keaton, but he doesn't feel like a slam dunk winner to me like Jeff Bridges did. He's got the narrative status, but no one would claim that he's overdue. I wouldn't call Cooper overdue either, but this would be his third nomination in a row and none of the other nominees have ever been nominated except him. That opening is just crazy though. Luckily for Keaton and Redmayne, voting doesn't begin for a few weeks, so there will likely be more backlash about American Sniper. Plus, if Keaton does win the SAG, like I expect him to, hopefully he'll give another great speech to help clinch the Oscar.
