And he is awesome for it! So happy for Marion. Still pissed by the lack of diversity.

I loved The Lego Movie. It is a great movie, and I'm shocked it wasn't nominated. It's super funny, and the whole family loves it- even the teenager! (She is the hardest sell these days)
Selma was the first movie in a looong time to get my ass to pay for a theater ticket, and I loved it. I'm surprised there is not more recognition for it. I don't think it is a perfect movie, but I saw it Sunday and have not stopped thinking about it since. I really appreciated how they touched on MLKjr's more, um, human aspects and thought they really did a great job with the film. With a man such a MLKjr, it is super easy to get in hero-worship mode (says the teacher that has taught about him obsessively all week). I admire him SO much. Learning about him was a world-view-shift for Young Narm, and I always worry about being too fangirl about him while discussing him in class. This movie did a good job (albeit not toooo deep) with addressing some of the issues/criticisms he faced. I'd show it to my students without hesitation.
It depicted brutality on a level that I was not quite prepared for(I'm a wuss and cannot watch violence at all anymore), and it was really a pretty remarkable viewing experience. I haven't seen the other movies this year, but I'm surprised there is not more love.
Bradley Cooper: I will never see American Sniper, because I just can't watch that kind of movie, but I think he is a great actor. But Silver Linings was much, much better than American Hustle.

Well, those nominations were underwhelming.
I hope Selma wins best picture just because, if not then the Theory of Everything. I hope Grand Budapest Hotel gets all the rest of the stuff the other two don't. Beyond that I couldn't care less.

So Selma only got Best Song and Best Picture nods. Was Hollywood really that upset about a lack of Mighty Whitey lead character and the "inaccuracies" about LBJ, or did they not bother because they awarded a black film last year? Can't say I'm really surprised. I think they were ok with 12 years because it shows AA being victims but the idea of black people being the masters of their own destiny and not needing a white savior was too much for Hollywood to take. And I've had it with the excuses from Oscar bloggers, media on others. Last year Michael B. Jordan and Octavia Spencer were overlooked for Fruitvale Station while mediocre shit from white actors was rewarded. And this year the same bullshit with Selma. That mixed with the increased amount of whitewashing in films has made Hollywood a complete joke. I am sure we'll get some token joke about the White Oscars this year and nothing will change. Same bullshit over and over again. She also invented a new South American country called Argentinia. Her delivery was astonishingly poor given she's the president of the Academy and should have been coached in how to pronounce every nominee ahead of time. Here is an interesting perspective on today's nominations. However, I do hate when people make an issue of race and gender, as if ensuring diversity among the acting/directing/writing nominees should be based on anything but merit. I would hate to be a token anything among the nominees. Selma was one of the most well-reviewed movies of the year. Better reviewed than most of the movies that got nods today. It sure seems like any mediocre work from a white person trumps extraordinary work by a minority. Every year there is another excuse for why the media and Hollywood is for white men only. I'm sick of the excuses.

Is it very wrong that I choose to interpret the Bradley Cooper nom as a "You were so great as Rocket Raccoon, but let's be serious, noone gets nominated for a voice work in a comic book movie, so where else did you star? Ah, yes."?

Maybe there should be a voice work Oscar. Seriously.
I'm surprised there is no buzz about Amy Adams being snubbed. I know she's white and people don't like her since she's mainstream now, but she did win the GG so not even being nominated seems odd to me.
How does the Oscar nomination work exactly? Are all members given blank ballots that they can fill in with whatever movie/person they want and majority rules? Or are they given a list of suggestions? How many members are there? Do only actors nominate actors, screenwriters nominate screenwriters, etc?

What is sad isn't that all the acting nominations are white, it's that it happened because David Oyelowo was snubbed. That is he was the only black actor/actress who even had a serious chance at getting a nomination. I heard good things about Get On Up, Belle and Beyond the Lights but they were not even in the conversation. And I think that does say something about what and whose stories are considered prestige by the Academy. And it's not just about box office either, none of the nominated films are box office hits. I think this is the biggest problem. With Selma, most of the blame was likely due to it's incompetent studio. Paramount just didn't transition in time from pushing Interstellar has its number one to pushing Selma has the number one after it was apparent that the former was going to be a dud with critics and not do that well with audiences. So they didn't send screeners out to the guilds, so it couldn't build momentum there. Many critics also had trouble seeing it until after they already handed out their awards and made their top 10 lists. (Yes, they should probably wait until the actual end of the year to do those things, but a lot of them just want to be the first group to give out awards and some just want to get it done before the holidays.) Paramount thought that they could get by with just sending screeners to the Oscar voters, but a smaller movie like Selma needed time to gain traction, it's very difficult to enter the race at the last minute unless there's a big name director behind a movie like Eastwood or Scorsese or it stars an A-Lister like Leonardo DiCaprio. I think that Paramount should have waited until next year to push Selma because the film wasn't completed until late this year, and that way it could have screened for all the guilds, been cited for more critics awards most likely, and just had time to gain traction. It likely would have won had they just waited like Sony Pictures Classic did with Foxcatcher. SPC pushed it to this year, and while it didn't get into picture, it over-performed even though a lot of Oscar pundits had already written it off. SPC took it to Cannes where it won best director and got rave reviews, and from there it was able to build traction even though many pundits thought that it might be too cold for Oscar voters. Paramount should have waited and taken Selma to Toronto where it likely would have won the prestigious audience award, and from there it would have gained momentum to carry it to the big nominations and wins. Overall though, I think the bigger problem is that aside from Selma, there was just a dearth of diversity in baity films. They could have looked harder like with Gugu Mbatha-Raw or Dear White People, but unfortunately voters don't look that much beyond what's on the Oscar radar. Even in someone like Marion Cotillard's case, she was a former nominee, and she had won two out of three of the big critics awards for her performance, so even though she may not have been as visible as Jennifer Aniston or Amy Adams, she was still on the radar to some extent.
