I think that I'm going to just skip the Oscars this year. I know I'm not even a drop in the bucket as far as viewership goes, but the more I read about the lack of non-white nominees, I'm kinda turned off. Selma was a great movie, and it will stay with me for a long time. I love Bradley Cooper, but will likely never see that sniper movie, and there is NO way I'm watching Julianne Moore's (although I adore her, too) so I'm out, basically. I read a brief interview by Spike Lee on The Daily Beast regarding the Oscars this year, and I just agree with him. This may be an Unpopular Opinion, but did anyone read Michael Moore's response/critique to American Sniper? Let me preface this by saying, I'm very supportive of our troops and do not ever mean to disrespect their incredible jobs and sacrifices- but Moore is goddamned right. I am skipping the Oscars this year. I just can't sit through a ceremony where a bunch of rich, white people make safe jokes about their lack of diversity and pretend like it is a laughing matter. That mixed with the media's hatchet job on Selma while letting Imitation Game and American Sniper off with their much worse factual issues is enough for me.

I'm completely stumped for who's going to win Best Supporting Actress. I think Patricia Arquette would have it on lock except she's going to star in the ridiculously-named populist garbage CSI: Cyber. And remember how (it's widely believed) Eddie Murphy lost for Dreamgirls because his next movie was this thing where he plays a woman and wears a fat suit? Same deal. Anti-TV snobbery has come a long way but not far enough that people starring in CSI spinoffs get Oscars. That leaves Laura Dern for a movie no one saw and two ingenues. I feel sort of like Emma Stone hasn't been around long enough and Keira Knightley is in that weird middle space where she's neither a big blockbuster type but not seen as a serious artist either. Keira Knightley maybe, by default. Or Emma Stone if Birdman is the big winner. Helen Hunt won Best Actress while simultaneously starring on a long-running sitcom, so I don't think they'll hold CSI: Cyber against Patricia Arquette. I think if she gets the SAG Award next week then we can safely call her a lock.

And that's bullshit anyway. Why would it matter what other projects the nominee has done/is planning to do? Just like the whole "she's earned it for her body of work" award or "he won't win because he hasn't paid his dues" is equally stupid. The nom is for a particular performance in a particular movie. Vote for that, or don't, but whatever else the nominee has or hasn't done shouldn't be relevant.
As for movie reality, Argo won and a lot of it was fiction. Why should that suddenly be a big deal this year?

And while it may not be the crowning achievement of TV, the various CSI shows have gotten some very good starring actors over the years.

I just saw Boyhood and was fairly meh on Patricia Arquette's performance (and extremely meh on the movie itself). In a movie that's supposed to be all about realism, I thought her dramatic scenes were jarringly overacted.

I saw it last night and loved it a lot but think she was definitely the weakest link of the four main actors.

It is definitely hers to lose, but I think there is a possible chance Laura Dern might steal it. She got the nomination when people weren't thinking she would and I don't know...i just think this is the upset category instead of Best Actor. I kind of wish the Oscars were at the start of award season OR like the only show. By the time they roll around, they are SO boring.

That's why they moved the Oscars back an entire month - so awards season wouldn't last so long and so there wouldn't be so many lesser awards shows stealing the Oscar thunder. It didn't work at all - everything just starts a lot earlier now and there are about 5 new awards shows added into the mix every year.

I'd be cool with Laura Dern pulling off a Marcia Gay Harden-style upset. I was far more impressed by her than Patricia Arquette. She was just so melodramatic, particularly in her last scene. The kids were both much better than her.

I disagree. I saw Wild and thought Laura Dern was awful. To me, all she did was smile/laugh and dance around for the 10 minutes she's in the film. I seriously can't believe she was nominated. Her parents put in a couple of ads in Variety/THR right before voting ended. I think they are all well liked by the Hollywood community, and it may have helped. Plus she seemed to go to the opening of every envelope during November & December.
I'm also agog about Emma Stone's nomination. (And I like both Emma and Laura). I like Keira too, but she really didn't do anything in TIG. Patricia was the only one who impressed me in that category.
I am still so pissed about Selma's lack of nominations. I can't let it go. I may watch the ceremony this year, but probably won't pay too much attention.
