Was "Hairspray" totally shut out? (I haven't had a chance to read all the noms yet...) Yes it was.

Yes. I'm kinda glad Into the Wild got mostly shut out. I watched the screener this weekend and...pretty landscapes, but not much else besides constant voiceover and not-so-deep "insights." Cate so shouldn't have been nominated for Elizabeth 2: Elizabeth-ier. She spent half the film crying and moping over a boy! Such a strong leader. No one saw it, but Nicole was phenomenal in Margot. She was so unlikable but yet strangely charismatic and unable to turn away from. I also am glad Saoirse Ronan was nominated. McAvoy and Knightley were fine, but not exactly "leading" roles. Clooney deserved to be nominated, IMO. Yes, the Academy loves him, but he was great. A brief story on TWBB's score and why it's ineligible is here. God, the Academy's rules are so fucking dumb sometimes. Overall, it seems like the last few years have gotten more fragmented -- you rarely see one film taking all the trophies anymore. Which is kinda a good thing. But also strange when the Best Picture winners haven't had any acting trophies for the past two years. I just hope the strike gets resolved so that first-time nominees (like, say, Diablo & Viggo) can walk the carpet.

I don't believe this is the reason she didn't get nominated. Why would they be embarrassed by her. Plus, there were plenty of people expecting noms that were shut out this year. Emile Hirsch, James McAvoy, Keira, etc.
It seems to be quite a mixed bag this year. There were quite a few nominations that I didn't expect (Ruby Dee, Tommy LJ).
I thought James was really good in 'Atonement', so it's a little disappointing that he wasn't nominated. I'm also a little disappointed that Ellen Page was nominated. I'm probably one of the few that was not impressed with her performance in 'Juno'. I thought Marion Cotillard was amazing in 'La Vie En Rose', so I'm really pulling for her.
I'm also pulling for Saoirse Ronan, but I have a feeling Ruby Dee will take it.

No anyone but Ruby Dee, I love her to death but she is definitely the weakest link in that group. Some of the nominees appeared on Oprah today, and I am most definitely rooting for Amy Ryan and Marion Cotillard in their categories. Not only are they both extremely talented and nice to look at, but I think both were the best in their categories.

Viggo Mortensen is totally an Oscarwatcher "There were a lot of candidates and a lot of the awards shows or organizations this year have had different mixes of people. It was nice to see Tommy Lee Jones in there. He hadn't been in so much of the mix and when I saw his name come up and there was only one name left to go, I thought, `Naah, well, there's no way (I'll be nominated).' So to be honest, I was quite surprised." — Viggo Mortensen, on his best actor nomination for "Eastern Promises." Aww, he's a sweetheart. And yeah, totally and Oscarwatcher! Hee! I'm so excited he's nominated, even though I think DDL or Depp will win it. Viggo just does such weird stuff half the time, you know, like playing some fantasy character or some Spanish guy with a big pornstache... that you never know if he'll get recognition for the amazing work he does. Edited because I just saw that my quoting was totally f'd up.

It was great to see The Diving Bell & The Butterfly get some nominations. The academy's rules on what can get nominated for foreign language films obviously need to be shaken up.
I took a chance on seeing the movie at the Toronto filmfest because I'd read such good things about it at Cannes. If ever there is a movie that makes you feel thrilled just to be alive when you leave the theatre it is this movie. I was really blown away by the movie, the story and the way it was shot.

The year Jolie won was the year she topped out on her weirdness. That was the time she tongued her brother. So yeah, I think they were embarrassed and she hasn't kissed up to the Academy enough to make them forget.

Since the SAGs are pretty much considered to be a lead in to the Oscars, I want to ask: is anyone watching the E! SAG pre-show? Jesus, could the hosts BE any more annoying (Guiliana or whatever the hell her name is and Debbie)? I honestly don't understand how the actors put up with their godawful questions and antics.

It seems like the interviews are longer than usual. Guiliana doesn't bother me as much as Debbie Matanopolous (or however the hell it's spelled) does. She's annoying. But, I'll take these two over Joan and Melissa Rivers ANY day.

Ruby Dee just threw a possible monkey wrench in the process. I don't think it will matter, in the end, I still see Tilda Swinton winning it, because everyone's worked for her.
Michael Clayton, while a really, really good conspiracy theory movie from the 70's, I just don't get being good enough for Oscar.
Go Julie Christie!!!!
