I think I'm already in the corner, as I'm the only one here whose voiced disappointment. Aw, I'll join you in disappointment. I've already said in her thread that I don't think Cate should've been nominated. I think I would've even liked Helena Bonham Carter in her place who I actually enjoyed more than Johnny in Sweeney Todd.

Apparently the Academy ruled it ineligible. I had been wondering about this as well!!! I had also expected to see it honored. Why was it ineligible? Was it because (I'm trying to remember) portions of it had been used before in some other context, or...?

I'm in the corner with scarlet too. I resisted seeing AMH for a long time because I didn't think I was going to be able to handle how upsetting it was, but once I actually plucked up the courage...I mean, I admit that I'm an Angelina fan in the first place, but she was seriously amazing, and very much more deserving of that nomination than Cate, IMO.
(Oh, and while I'm not a big Atonement fan overall, I'm thrilled to see Saoirse Ronan in there, because she was AWESOME.)

So happy about the love for Johnny Depp, now I can't decide whether I want him or the amazing DDL to win.
While I'm disappointed that Angelina didn't get a nomination, at least Keira Knightley didn't get one either. While I can live with AJ not being nominated it would have been a travesty if KK had been nominated while AJ wasn't; if that makes any sense. I'm actually quite surprised that AJ didn't get nominated I was anticipating a Marisa Tomei situation where they try to justify her previous win with another nomination.

I love Angelina but if anyone "stole" her Oscar nomination, it was Laura Linney (who I also love). Laura didn't get any precursor awards/noms and was the big surprise in her category while Cate received double GG, SAG, and BAFTA noms. And the role of Elizabeth is so showy with all those fancy dresses and thunderous speeches.

I for one was not overly impressed, with the exception of a few surprises, it was par for the course. And I was shocked that Jason R got a Best Director nod - I didn't overly care for Juno but I could see the Best Pic nom - it is the kind of surprise that the Academy loves, besides every year has to have the quirky, odd choice so that the Academy can pat themselves on the back and pretend their not stuffy. But Best Director, I can't get behind that.
On the other hand, really excited for Viggo Mortensen and I would have given George Clooney's spot to Emile Hirsch or James McAvoy but I guess they are too young. I am shocked that both Blanchett and Page got Best Actress noms, I love Cate as much as anyone else but yeah..that was a shocker. And I'm torn on Page, her character to me in Juno was almost an exact replica of her character in Hard Candy. But then again, who the hell would have taken their places.

I liked Atonement so it was nice to see the movie get several noms. I always thought Keira's chances were better than James' but I think in both cases the fact that they were pushed for lead rather than supporting probably hurt them. At least Keira already has a nom under her belt whereas James who was great in this and The Last King has none.
There were quite a few surprise names for me - Cate in lead, Laura Linney, Tommy Lee Jones. Nice that the oscars aren't blindly nominating the same few people.
I was surprised to see Cate get a nom for TGA. I love her to bits but it was far inferior to Elizabeth. I think her chances are better in supporting although I predict Amy Ryan will take it as the "newbie".
I would love, love it if Johnny won. I was so thrilled for Viggo that after getting ignore for Violence he finally got nominated.

I have heard that many, especially older, members of the Academy were really horrified and embarrassed by Jolie when she won. I don't think they've forgotten and I'm pretty sure they haven't bought into this Saint Angie thing either. That plus the fact that neither the movie or her performance got that much buzz, I wasn't surprised she didn't get nominated.
Honestly, the thing I thought she had going for her was I thought the members might like to see Brad there in a tux. That's why I think they keep nominating George Clooney -- they want the big stars there.

Was "Hairspray" totally shut out?
(I haven't had a chance to read all the noms yet...)
