Bardem and Christie are the closest things to a lock this year, but nowhere near as strongly as Mirren and Whitaker last year. I still think Depp could take best actor from DDL, the academy seems to love Johnny now (it freakin' took them long enough though) and DDL has already won before. I'm fairly certain that, as much as I love him, Viggo has no shot in hell.

I was really wrong about McAvoy/Gosling/Hirsch. I was convinced that at least one of them might get in. But the Academy went with their old "No actors under 40" rule there for Best Actor No problems on the women's side in that department of course. Youngest actor this year to be nominated? 32 year old Casey Affleck. Youngest actress is of course Saoirse Ronan who is 13 years old . One Atonement nom I'm especially happy about is the one for Original Score 'cause that was some beautiful music

I do hope Atonement gets Original Score, the use of the typewriter noise was just perfect. It racheted up the tension nicely.

I see that Atonement directed itself. That's a good trick.
Cannot believe There Will Be Blood was shut out for score. Every critic raved about it.

God I wish that strike would get resolved....this is shaping up to be the best list of nominees in years and it probably won't be on TV...crap.

Apparently the Academy ruled it ineligible.

I'll be the minority voice and say I'm very disappointed Angelina wasn't nominated. I thought she was fabulous in AMH and more deserving than Cate Blanchett (I know--blasphemous!).

I think I'm already in the corner, as I'm the only one here whose voiced disappointment.

It is actually a bit of a shocker that Jolie wasn't nominated. Laura Linney was shut out almost all season and people sort of forgot about her (or stopped predicting her in their frustration). I know the Globes mean nothing but the fact that Angelina also got a SAG nom would ensure her a spot in the line-up. Anyway, cute reactions from the nominees can be found here and here Viggo Mortensen is totally an Oscarwatcher
