Is anyone else scratching their heads over Ruby Dee squeaking in there? I think some site counted her screentime and it was what, four minutes? Something like that.

The Ruby Dee nomination is more of a tribute to her career as a whole and Hollywood pretty much ignoring her and Ossie Davis.

Don't get me wrong, I'm happy she got in. It's surprising though. I'll be rooting for Amy Ryan though, she was spectacular.
And it fills me with glee that A Mighty Heart didn't get a single nomination.

For some unknown reason I have a dislike for Sean Penn as well as for the weirdly-faced kid from The Girl Next Door

Me too solly. Luckily I like Hal Holbrook so his nomination doesn't bug me. Sean Penn getting shut out is awesome.
So clearly Best Picture will be going to No Country for Old Men or There Will Be Blood. They're only Best Picture nominees that also got nominated for Film Editing, and the movie that wins film editing almost always wins best picture too.

What, no tech love for 300? That movie had great special effects in it.
I also heard how much of a prick the guy in Into the Wild is like (as in a Sean Penn Jr.) and am happy he got shut out.

Once again we're in total agreement solly. If Bardem doesn't win it damn well better be Affleck that gets it, I ain't gonna stand for no Old Actor Who Never Won Before Award.

I'm of the opinion of many who believe had she not fallen in love with the tanning salon, she would've received an Oscar nomination. The "coloring" was a distraction.

Wow... In all, I am pretty happy with the way things turned out. Some nice surprises (Tommy Lee Jones, Laura Linney, no Angelina) and some disappointments (the biggest given how things turned out is that Joe Wright was not nominated for Director for Atontment). I am surprised that Tony Gilroy was nominated over Wright. I thought that if both Michael Clayton and Atonement got Best Picture nominations, he would be the shut-out not Joe Wright. Too bad - but still a pretty good day for Atonement, all things considered. I am also surprised by the lack of love for Into the Wild. It seems like the Academy likes to nominate actors when they branch out and write or direct and Into the Wild had a lot of critical and awards love. Yay!!! For Viggo and TOMMY LEE JONES!!!!!!!!! His performance wasn't even on my Oscar radar but he was so great in both Elah and No Country. Glad to see him on the list (even if it is DDL's to lose at this point). The Best Actor list is seriously delicious (even without James McAvoy). I don't know that Cate has a shot to be the upsetter this year in the Best Actress category. I just don't think the acclaim for The Golden Age is there for her to pull it off. Yeah, she did miss out on a very deserving Oscar win for the same role (although I am in that teeny tiny minority who thinks Gwyneth was deserving of her Oscar that year.... ) but I think it will take a lot of support to take the statue away from Julie Christie and I don't think The Golden Age has it. I also don't see them awarding the statue to Ellen Page because she is too young or Marion Cotillard because she is too foreign (gotta love the Academy!). Christie is a legend at this point and a previous winner who, imo, deserved to win for Afterglow over one of the worst Oscar wins ever - even worse than the much-maligned Gwyneth, imo - Helen Hunt for As Good As It Gets. If the Academy are wanting to give a make-up award (in theory, that is what Cate's would be) I think they might give it to Linney - who is always excellent but who has never won (and who was very, very, very deserving for You Can Count on Me and who lost that year to Julia Roberts). If there is one "lock" that is vulnerable at this point (heh, the day the noms come out) I think it is Javier Bardem for No Country. He gives such an iconic performance and is the clear frontrunner right now but Casey Affleck, Philip Seymour Hoffman and Hal Holbrook have all been building buzz and could shake things up in the next few weeks.
