Way to go Diablo. Your win means that anyone, no matter what their background, can reach for the distance. Congrats!

I wish biopics would stop dominating the Best Actress category.
00s: '01, '02, '04, '06, '07, '08 - 2 original characters, 2 years left 90s: '96, '00 - 8 original characters Things have definitely changed.
It's a little better for men: 00s: '03, '04, '06, '07 - 4 original characters, 2 years left 90s: '91, '97 - 8 original characters
This comment was inspired by the Forest Whitaker quote posted in the Cotillard thread: "Did you not see her in 'La Vie En Rose?' She’s transforming! That’s it!" While I would have voted for some of the winning performances myself, I really don't like how "transforming yourself" sometimes seems like the only way to show you're a good actor: a good performance is a) based on a real person, b) different from your red carpet self or c) preferably both.

The press room photos and the Thank You videos on Oscar.com are adorable. I love this year's Oscar class, especially the four actors that won. I don't care if they're Europeans or Americans or whatever, I just like these four. They deserve it and all four of them looked like they were absolutely thrilled and enjoying their moment. Often the winners seems very tense (which I understand completely), for example Reese' or Hilary's speeches were anything but naturally joyful or natural, just intense speeches about their lives. But Tilda, Javier, Daniel and Marion were all so sweet in their joy, gave all very lovely speeches and looked really happy.

With God as my witness, I just found out RIGHT NOW. Like 5 minutes ago I read it on a website. News to me! I went and tried those shoes on at Stuart Weitzman yesterday. My stylist mentioned that they'd been made just for me, and I was like, "Cool. They're sparkly. Should look nice with my dress." I'm not really a shoe girl. Then Weitzman is like, "Those are real diamonds, you know." I thought that seemed unusual for a shoe, but my entire life is so bizarre these days that I didn't really think about it. And now I find out they're like a million-dollar weird publicity thing! I honestly had no idea. Now I'm going to be paranoid all night. That post makes this ever so much more interesting.

Throwing in my congrats to diablo as well.
Some general thoughts about this year's Oscars. - I was impressed by the 98-year-old guy's elocution. I, too, was expecting a stumbling, shaky speech, but he held it together. After all those decades in the business, imagine the stories he could tell! - Tilda Swinton looked horrid. Would a touch of mascara have killed her? And let's not even get into that dress. Ugh. - I wonder why they made so much fuss over the 80th! Anniversary! Big whoop. They just had a big to-do for the 75th. Save it for the 100th. While I love montages, it was an unnecessary time-killer to show all 79 previous best pic winners. - As I said, I love montages, but way too many. - I also love musical numbers and like to see all the best song nominees performed. However, often the song has a specific interpretation within the movie, and just singing it onstage renders them bland. Witness the first song from Enchanted, sung by Amy Adams. In the movie, it's sort of a mockery/homage to all those Disney princess songs where the animals chip in to help their gal get the job done. Except in Enchanted, the princess is in a modern city, so the only animals kicking around to help her are roaches and rats. It's quite amusing to see her cleaning up the apartment using vermin as helpers. None of that was apparent as she sang the song at the Oscars. Maybe they should just show the clip from the movie as she sings or something. I loved Enchanted and loved the songs. I think three from one movie cancelled each other's votes out. - Jon Stewart seemed way more relaxed than last time. I thought he was funny and did a great job. - Just an observation about costume and set design awards. It seems to my amateur eye that it would be a much greater challenge to design something from scratch (as in fantasy or sci-fi) where the designer has nothing to go by. For a period piece, they just have to look up what was worn in that time and copy it. ::shrug:: Just a thought. - Travolta always looks weird at these things, but I think he's just pissed because he turned the male lead role in Chicago and is still kicking himself. - Re: the In Memoriam segment. Why, oh why, can't the person who intros it just ask the audience to withhold all applause until the end? That would seem to end the popularity applause that is so uncomfortable to watch/hear.
And it seems Diablo Cody is in a lot of post-Oscar media coverage, and I don't recall that from other years regarding a writing award. Interesting.

Freddydingo, read your PMs, please.
I wish the producers would cut out the lame scripted patter and let people actually speak -- it's really sad when the members of a group accept their Oscars and you can tell that they all worked hard to stay brief, yet the orchestra is forced to play them off. Really, I'd rather hear what these people have to say than watch Seth Rogen and that other guy exchange painful inanities about Halle Berry and Judy Dench.
