Sean Penn was fantastic as Harvey Milk. Looked and sounded like him, embodied his charisma and joy. Loved him. I wish James Franco was nominated. He was so perfect and gentle.

I loath Sean Penn too, but God help me if I didn't love him in Milk. He was breathtaking, and so was James Franco.

I guess I'm petty. I know Sean Penn is a great actor, but his personality turns me off so much that I just think, "Nooooo...." What? You say that the Academy Awards should be based on merit?

Penn actually made me like him in Milk, and managed to completely hide the douchebaggery and assholishness I see in him most of the time. Now that's some talent right there. I'll wait to see how the SAG Awards go on Sunday before I make any firm predictions, about the closest to a lock I can think of right now is Kate Winslet.

Neither Sean Penn nor Mickey Rourke are very popular among voters, so I think that decision will be whoever they dislike less. I give the edge to Mickey because it's a good comeback story and because Sean won recently. If they split the vote and somehow Brad Pitt ends up winning I will vomit.
Kristin Scott-Thomas got shafted. Best performance of the year.
The love for The Reader is purely thematic - the Academy traditionally creams itself for Holocaust movies.
That Angelina is something else. She's got mad skillz for someone who has no publicist.

I still can't believe someone so humorless and angry as Penn played someone as happy and vibrant as Milk. I won't be upset if they give him the Oscar. My unpopular Oscar opinion is that it's too bad Brad Pitt was nominated. I thought he was alright in TCCoBB, but not Oscar worthy. And Angelina Jolie's spot should have gone to Kristen Scott Thomas for I've Loved You So Long. ETA- Jinx, wol.

I don't know who I'd swap him out for, and I know nobody's been paying attention to him this award season, but I'm slightly bummed that Michael Sheen didn't get a nod for Frost/Nixon. Frank Langella was amazing in that movie and I'd honestly like him to win, but Sheen matched him at every step. Ah well.

I'm torn between Brad Pitt and Sean Penn. They both did incredible jobs (of course, YMMV). I'm really excited for Viola Davis as well as Kate Winslet. And I'd love to see Benjamin Button win for effects, if nothing else.
