There are new rules but the new limit is 2 nominations per film (thanks to Enchanted & Dreamgirls). They also revised the rules a few years back so that the songs have to be a more emotional/integral part of the film and not just some big-name artist singing over the end credits.
Visual Effects only has three noms as well.
The majority of Benjamin Button's noms are technical, which it will likely sweep.

Which would be why Springsteen got shut out, the WALL-E song was also technically over the credits but the credits had additional animation that added to the story. I'm psyched for the AR Rahman songs, I'm pulling for O...Saya (if only to see M.I.A. win an Oscar) but Peter Gabriel will probably win.
I'm so happy Winslet got nominated for The Reader, in my opinion it was the better performance. Much less hammy. I'm thrilled for Taraji P. Henson, I hope she wins because she was the best part of that movie for me.

Congrats to Shannon for RR. He was superb. The movie was horrible. Also to Taraji, Jenkins, and Davis.
Amy Adams nomination is a joke IMO.
Yes! to no love for the Dark Knight.

I'm interested to see what people wear. I think the economy might tone things down a bit.
ETA: I'm really happy about Melissa Leo's nom. Frozen River was heartbreaking, and she was fantastic.

It was a fair mix. Some expected, some surprises (noms & non-noms). I'm happy for Richard Jenkins. Haven't seen the film yet (I put it in my cue last week so I'll have to movie it up) but he's always fantastic.
The supporting actor noms are the strongest bunch. Yay for everyone. Yay for Downey & Shannon. Heath will probably win but that's fine. He was, by far, the best part of the movie. I barely remember anything else but him.

I'm shocked at the love for Benajmin Button, which won no major Golden Globes and was a very mediocre film IMO. And Brad Pitt's makeup artist deserves the Oscar nod much more than he does. But I guess BB is the kind of sweeping "epic" Academy voters love. The storyline, directing, and acting can be debated but there is no question that BB is an extremely impressive film based on technical merit. Makeup, visual effects, cinematography, art direction, costumes, and so on are all top-notch and that's where the bulk of its nominations are. Yeah, Anne Hathaway will only wear $50,000 in jewellry instead of $100,000.

I am so excited to see Richard Jenkins nominated. The Visitor was such a delightful film and I really enjoyed his performance.
I am not excited to see that smug, humorless dickhead Sean Penn nominated. God, I hate him.
I haven't had a chance to see a lot of the films so my opinions are limited thus far.

I'm surprised at the big Revolutionary Road snub, especially in the adapted screenplay category. I would have liked to see The Wrester get an art direction nomination. It wasn't flashy or period like the other nominees, damn if it wasn't realistic.
I haven't seen The Changeling, but I hate that Angelina got a nomination. She is such a hack with her numerous "badass/ crazy hot chick" roles. I guess I'll reserve judgment until I see the movie.

As long as Benjamin Button or Sean Penn don't win, I'll be happy. Well...I guess BB is close to a lock for the technical awards. But as long as it doesn't touch the 'major' categories, it's all good.

I think that TDK will win some of the numerous technical awards the film's up for.
