I like her but why is Marisa Tomei nominated for an Oscar? She spent more time undressed and dancing than anything else.

Here is a list partial list of the BAFTA film winners from yesterday:
Best Film: Slumdog Millionaire Outstanding British Film: Man on Wire The Carl Foreman Award: Steve McQueen, Hunger Director: Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire Original Screenplay: In Bruges Adapted Screenplay: Slumdog Millionaire Film Not in the English Language: I've Loved You So Long Animated Film: ]WALL-E Leading Actor: Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler Leading Actress: Kate Winslet, The Reader Supporting Actor: Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight Supporting Actress: Penelope Cruz, Vicky/Cristina Barcelona Orange Rising Star Award: Noel Clarke (I'm happy that PAB, Michael Cera didn't win it, but I expected Rebecca Hall to win.)
These were pretty predictable for the most part. As expected Slumdog Millionaire swept everything, and the acting winners were all that surprising either.
I don't know how much influence the BAFTA has on the Oscars or vice versa since there are awards out there that just live to be reliable precursors to the Oscars for some reason, but last year when Tilda Swinton started to make her run at the Oscar here, it feels like maybe that the BAFTA might help show where the momentum is going if it's not a clear cut race. Like last year with Swinton where any of the almost all of the four nominees also had a good chance of winning since Blanchett won the Globe and Ruby Dee won the SAG, and Amy Ryan won all the critics awards.
I don't think the SAG is enough to show where a race might be headed because as I stated in an earlier post, they haven't been around as long as the Globes or Oscars, so sometimes they're still playing catch-up like with honoring Meryl Streep this year since she had never won an individual award in film before. If a person gets both the SAG and BAFTA as Winslet did, albeit in different categories, then he/she is a pretty solid frontrunner, imo. Anyhow, I think BAFTA might show that the momentum for the Best Actor race has now shifted to Mickey Rourke, (Penn had also never won a SAG before which is important to remember), especially since they can honor Milk with Best Original Screenplay so it's not going to go home empty-handed, and Rourke has the best comeback story of the year.
With the Supporting Actress race, it's still up in the air, because Winslet dominated the other precursors, that I don't know if Cruz who was the frontrunner before Winslet was placed in supporting, will fully gain back her momentum even with the BAFTA win, or if they'll want to honor Doubt with a big award since it's likely to go empty-handed if it doesn't win here for Viola Davis. If Vicky/Cristina Barcelona had been nominated for Original Screenplay, I think Cruz would have had a better chance since it would show that there was a little more love for it than just her. However, since it didn't which was sort of surprising to me since it was Woody Allen and he picked up a WGA nomination for it, they may figure Cruz can wait since she has Nine and Broken Embraces next year.

I do think that either Viola Davis or Taraji P. Henson might upset in Supporting.
And yes, as a professional pessimist (ahem), I still don't think that Kate will win the Oscar.

If Kate loses, she will be devastated. Winning an Oscar really means A LOT to her. I still remember how pissed off she looked when she lost to Helen Hunt back at the '98 ceremony.

I think any actresses after being nominated several times and not winning - and seeing actresses win the first time they get nominated would finally want to win. I can't hold that against Kate.

Personally, I find it refreshing when an actor/actress is honest about wanting to win. It's the phony baloney "Oh, It's just an honor to be nominated!" that bugs me. Some of them do mean it when they say that I'm sure but the ones that don't mean it are so obvious to me.

Hollywood loves an underdog, and they are very forgiving ... but I wonder if the voters would be afraid to give it to him; Mickey's kind of a wild card. (I've got my fingers crossed for him.)

I know people want to win but I think its better to be nominated multiple times and not win than to be nominated once, win , and never be nominated again. If you keep getting nominated your career is flourishing.
I didn't really think Kate deserved nominations for Sense and Sensibility or Titanic.

I don't know about Titanic but I love Sense & Sensibility and I think she & Emma fully deserved those noms.
It's a great sign that she's been nominated multiple times but I'm sure by now she'd love to win and I can't blame her.

Poor Glenn Close has 5 nominations but zero wins and was the Kate Winslet of the 80s. She was absolutely incredible in Dangerous Liaisons but that was one super-competitive category that year as she was up against Meryl Streep (A Cry in the Dark), Jodie Foster (The Accused), Melanie Griffith (Working Girl - talk about the odd woman out!), and Sigourney Weaver (Gorillas in the Mist).
