There must be some innate desire to win an award.
I always thought Susan Lucci was more famous for racketing up a bajillion Emmy nominations, but she still wanted to win the thing. Once she won, I thought the novelty of her being nominated so many times was gone. But she still wanted the award.
Maybe it comes from the prestige of having Oscar winner before your name. Gwyneth Paltrow doesn't have the kind of career she wants now but whenever she enters a room she'll always be announced as Oscar Winner Gwyneth Paltrow. Maybe that's why she'll never be humble or be brought down a peg.
However, having said that, if I were an actress, I'd rather be Kate Winslet and have her career, Oscar or no Oscar.

I'll predict that Slumdog Millionaire will lose either Director or Film. Just a gut feeling. I don't think they'll get both. I just can't imagine that Ben Button with all its noms will leave Oscar night without any big awards.

Remember all the nominations that The Color Purple received? Eleven nominations and zero wins.

I'm thinking that if they do get only one major award, it'll be for Taraji P. Henson. I just have a feeling about that one.

I think Milk peaked too soon.
Plus, the last four Best Picture winners have been downers. That's why SM will win. It's a feel good film for the times.

My final picks:
Picture - Slumdog Millionaire Director - Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire Actor - Mickey Rourke Actress - Kate Winslet S. Actor - Heath Ledger S. Actress - Taraji P. Henson (going out on a limb here but this category tends to bring the most surprises).
I predict the technical wins will be split amongst Slumdog, Benjamin Button, and The Dark Knight with Slumdog getting about 6-7 Oscars total. With the economy being what it is, I think voters will pick the most uplifting of the movies.

Nate Silver, of fivethirtyeight.com (who did an amazing job of predicting the November elections) has jumped into the Oscar pool game, and he (and his computer) agrees with you on this. So you at least have a statistics genius backing you up.

Cool!
That being said, I don't really agree with most of my picks. I liked Benjamin Button better than Slumdog and I can't stand Mickey Rourke. As Chelsea Handler said, you don't get an Oscar for being sober for two weeks!

BB is Forest Gump 2.0. Been there, done that, said the Academy.
The only no-brainers are SM for Best Picture, Boyle for Best Actor, and Heath for Supporting Actor.
I'm going back and forth on the other categories. I thought Kate Winslet was a shoe-in, but now, I'm not so sure. Meryl Streep gave a cute speech at the SAG Awards, perhaps that might win it for her. It's a coin flip between Mickey Rourke and Sean Penn for Best Actor.
As for Supporting Actress, it depends on who cancels each other out. All I know is Marisa Tomei won't be accepting the award since she already has one.
