I want Richard Jenkins for The Visitor to win. I also want In Bruges for the screenplay. It was brillant.

Ack, Brindle, your avatar is having the same effect on me as Sarah's commercials; making me tear up.

It seems weird to me that Sean Penn now has more lead Oscars than Meryl Streep. Not because he's less of an actor - I don't like everything Streep does by any means - but because she's racked up an astonishing twelve nominations for lead actress (in addition to her three for supporting actress), yet only 1 out of those 12 bore fruit.
That actually makes Streep Oscar's all time loser as far as lead nominations go.
The only immediately upcoming role she has that might win her an Oscar is playing Julia Child in a Nora Ephron comedy. On the one hand, impersonating a real person sounds like a surefire way to win. On the other hand, it's Nora Ephron, the woman who made Sleepless in Seattle and You've Got Mail. But I could actually see Streep take it next year, just as Nicholson won a third for his very average work in the very average, run-of-the-mill romantic comedy As Good As It Gets.

My picks:
Sup. Actor: Heath (we miss you) Sup. Actress: Viola Davis (in the "I couldn't have done what she did in this role" performance) Actor: Penn (but I'll be happy with Mickey, too) Actress: Kate Orig. Screenplay: Slumdog Millionaire Adapted Screenplay: Milk Director: Danny Boyle (though I prefer Fincher myself) Picture: Slumdog Millionaire (still haven't seen it; still don't really want to.)
Your Screenplay picks are backwards. SM is up for Adapted Screenplay and Milk is up for Original Screenplay.
I know, I know, it's nitpicking.
I still can't figure out who will win for supporting actress and actress (I know Kate fanatics, she should win, but you never know). As for actor, I thought Sean Penn might win, but I truly feel Mickey Rourke will win.
I don't understand the SM hate. I liked the movie and as I said before, it's the zeitgeist film and none of the other nominated movies fit the bill. Oh yeah, Nedsdag well, well... your Oscar is showing!!! So there. totally missed that. Thank you for the correction. Still got it rightishly backwardsesque.

So, onto 2009's hopefuls. I wonder if Hilary Swank will manage to snag her third(!!!) lead actress Oscar for Amelia. Meryl's Julia Child movie seems kinda lightweight but if anyone can get a nom, it's her. Cate Blanchett doesn't appear to have anything coming out so she's out of the running.

Huge news about the Best Picture category: This could go well or very badly. With ten nominees, they're more likely to get a box office hit or two in there and definitely more stars from those hit movies to attend the ceremony. Doubling the field lowers the amount of support a movie will need to win. This is going to be interesting.

I wonder if its so that some 'blockbusters' can be included. Let's face it the recent noms have all been pretty small, artsy films and it doesn't mean much to most people--hence the drop in viewership. I guess anything to get more people watching....

Academy voting is conducted like political campaigns from what I have heard. I have often wondered why big movies like spiderman don't get more awards. I would think that Iron man would rate something, I'd consider it watchable for anyone, not just overgrown comic book fans.
eta: The studio financing these blockbusters certainly have the money to mount a big campaign to get some awards for these films but they don't. I guess all they really care about is ticket and dvd sales.

On Oscar watching sites, they're already joking how it means everyone else is fighting for the eight slots left after Pixar and Clint Eastwood get their nominations.
