With all the talk about Carey Mulligan definitely getting nominated, I hope she's not becoming another Sally Hawkins. Young, not-too-well known actress with a much-praised performance that wins every critics award on the planet - only to end up not getting a nom come Oscar time. Though, to be completely honest: I didn't mind all that much in Sally Hawkins' case.

Hopefully that won't happen to her, but since the race this year is so full of young newcomers (Mulligan, Gabourey Sidibe, Abbie Cornish, maybe even Saoirse Ronan), it's bound to happen to somebody. I can't see the Academy nominating 3 relative unknowns. Then again, other than Meryl, Hilary Swank, Helen Mirren (her movie just got a distributor) and whichever Nine actress has a supporting part substantial enough for Harvey Weinstein to claim it's a lead performance (supposedly Marion Cotillard), there isn't really anybody else on the radar.

Hilary Swank with 3 Best Lead Actress Oscars? Hilarious.
To be fair, I know that she did a good job with the two roles that she did get Oscars for (I thought she deserved the first one for sure). But at the same time I've seen her in other stuff, and in anything where she doesn't play a boy or a tomboy she kinda sucks.

IMO, Hilary Swank is a good actress who is passable in various genres but damn, when she gets a role that fits within her narrow range of excellence, look out!

I Love You" before any voting takes place this year.

Though, to be completely honest: I didn't mind all that much in Sally Hawkins' case. I think the frequent Audrey Hepburn comparisons are an advantage. Mulligan is cute with a "star is born" story, but Hawkins didn't look like an ingenue and she wasn't an Imelda Staunton-like distinguished supporting actress either, so in that sense it wasn't such a shock to me that she missed out on the nom. Although after the Polanski apologism, the Hollywood love for a film about a teenager's affair with a much older man suddenly seems creepier. Well, I've liked Mulligan's work so I'll be happy if she's nomination-worthy - at least she should get a lot of good opportunities in the future.

I don't think you can An Education on the same level as Polanski. From what I understand the girl in An Education is nearly 18 years old and is a willing participant in the relationship. The relationship itself might be a bit icky but not nearly as icky as raping a 13 year old girl.

I didn't think Swank was good or charismatic in the girl version of The Karate Kid or in Beverly Hills 90210 either.

The main character is 16 when the film starts, and 18 when it ends. I can see Carrie Mulligan getting a nomination. I also see Nick Hornby being nominated for best screenplay, and the costume designer getting a nomination for those truly divine creations everyone wears.
