Glad to see 500 Days of Summer and The Hurt Locker getting some love. I like Sandra Bullock (I have to, she's adopted my city as hers), but those were not award-worthy performances. She was good, but not that good. Sorry, huntergrayson, I lurve Meryl Streep, but will 100% agree with you that It's Complicated looks like the worst kind of schlock, even with the A-list cast. Cannot stand that director. I wish we had less Nancy Meyers' and more Katheryn Bigelows in the female directing world. Bigelow FTW! ETA: Here's a ton of "For Your Consideration" posters. Some of them are *hilarious*. Patton Oswalt for Best Actor? Okie dokie. Nic Cage is wearing more eye makeup than Christina Aguilera.

The New York Times film critic shares your sentiment, as evidenced in this awesome profane rant she recently gave on Hollywood sexism, female directors and why rom-coms suck donkey balls these days.

Sandra Bullock got nominated for The Proposal? LOLwut?? Don't get me wrong, I liked The Proposal as the silly rom-com fluff it is, but in terms of it being awards material? Er... was this a weak year for women or something?
I'm excited to see Anna Kendrick nominated for Up in the Air. She's one of the few (unironically) good things about the fail that is the Twilight franchise ("Movie night with Bella!"), it is nice to see her get this sort of recognition.

Oh. My. Freaking. God. That article is everything I feel about women in film. I'm a woman. I'm a woman who loves Evil Dead and Donnie Darko, and Hong Kong action flicks. I hate modern romantic comedies. Give me the screwball comedies of the 30s and 40s, The Philadelphia Story, Bringing Up Baby, His Girl Friday, where the actors and the characters had spark and charisma. Not like the wet noodle rom-com actors of today (The exception being I ntolerable Cruelty by the Coen Brothers). Do NOT give me Nora Ephron, I hate her. Yup, that article needs to go on my Facebook. Thanks for the link, hunter.

My final paper for the film classes I took in high school was primarily inspired by this this great Zacharek article classic 30s/40s rom-coms versus today's crapfests. The retro gender politics prevalent in current rom-coms drive me INSANE and make me feel like the portrayal of women has regressed. Just check out the ad for the saccharine-looking "Leap Year" - whose entire premise is that Amy Adams has to go all the way to Ireland because they have a folk tradition that says that women can propose to men on Feb 29th. Right, because there's no way a woman, in the U.S.A., in 200-fricking-9, would be allowed to propose to her boyfriend otherwise. Meanwhile, the Academy has released the F/X shortlist. Watchmen better make the final cut. GI Joe? Hells no. The effects were TERRIBLE - it looked like a bad videogame and that they hadn't finished rendering the CGI. Meanwhile, I am very unpleased that they left The September Issue off the Best Documentary shortlist. It was so good! I'm not even a huge fan of docs in general but I thought it was really well-done. Enjoy appearing on Vogue's worst-dressed list forevah, AMPAS Board!

Er... was this a weak year for women or something? I think the HFPA just wants all of the A-list celebs to attend their party this year. This has to be the reason why Julia Roberts was nominated for Duplicity. She didn't stink up the joint, but she didn't give an award-winning performance, either.

Nothing for Jeremy Renner? I thought The Hurt Locker would be the one to make him a star.

You mean Nancy "there are poor people and minorities in America?" Meyers?
ITA on Bigelow, plus it should be good seeing her competing against her ex-husband.
If it was up to me, The Hangover and The Hurt Locker should win in the movie categories. I haven't finished watching Inglorious Basterds, but it feels like a bloody episode of Hogan's Heroes if you ask me.
Oops, no Billy Brad nomination? Tee Hee.

Teehee, I looove Colin Firth's reaction to his nom I know he probably said that as a joke but I just had to look his awards history up....most awards he's won so far are for "A Single Man". He once won a SAG with the ensemble for Shakespeare in Love in 1999 and a British TV awards more than twenty years ago. Go Colin!!

When I heard that Julia Roberts got nominated I had to stop and think what the hell she'd been in this year. Duplicity, really? Is the field that thin this year? I think you guys are right - it's a case of HFPA wanting to make sure some of the A-listers are there. With Inglorious Basterds getting so many noms they will probably guarantee Brad and Angie showing up to support the movie. You've got Matt & George also guaranteed to be there.
I think there are some names there that will definitely not be heard come oscar nom time. Out of the best actresses I think the only ones that could be considered a lock are Meryl for Julia, Carey & Gabourey. Out of best actors I'd say George & Colin could be considered sure bets. I'm really doubtful Tobey will get a nom. I'm on the fence about Morgan & Jeff Bridges.
I was surprised there was no love for Bright Star & Abbie Cornish - I thought that they might have recognized that as it seemed to be critically praised if not a box office success.
