As there's always a surprise in one of these major categories, I think Christopher Plummer has the best chance of spoiling the Oscar pools. If Sandra Bullock manages to win, I think she'll have the best speech of the night. She's very likable and it seems like everything is aligning for her, All About Steve excepted. And if JR can win for absolute tripe like Erin Brokovich, why shouldn't Bullock win for The Blindside. I do think, and I'm sure I'm in the minority -- that this was a bad year for acting. Or maybe the films were just bad/unmemorable. Because honestly with the exception of a few supporting actress roles (Monique, Kendrick, Farmiga), CW in Inglorious, and the wonderful motion capture performance of Zoe Saldana -- not very many performances stood out for me. They just didn't. And it pains me to say that, because I love movies and I love silly award shows -- but the movies that stood out for me last year are few and far between. Back to the Oscars - I guess I would be okay with anything at this point. As long as Kathryn Bigelow wins Best Director and George Clooney does not win Best Actor. I also do not want to see Up in the Air win Best Picture.

Christopher Waltz just has to win if there is any justice in the awards world. His performance was one of the best I have ever seen. I never even heard of the guy before IB!!

There is no justice in the awards world. See Gwyneth Paltrow, Julia Roberts, Renee Zwellegger, Tommy Lee Jones, Marisa Tomei, Crash etc..

I'll give Marisa and Tommy Lee a pass because they followed up with Oscar nominated performances after their wins. As for Crash, I'm not going to revive the controversy because I thought neither Crash nor Brokeback Mountain deserved the Oscar and both were overrated, but I guess I'll leave that for the Unpopular Movie Opinions thread.

Waltz will have the same problem Ralph Fiennes had when he was up for Schindler's List: no matter how good you are in a performance, the Academy will not give an Oscar to anyone who plays a Nazi officer no matter how good you were in a role. Yes, some will say Kate Winslet won for playing an alleged Nazi, but the Academy got tired of her getting nominated (tough luck, Glenn Close and Sigourney Weaver), that they gave it to her. I thought that Bruno Ganz deserved a nomination for playing Hitler in Downfall.

I saw The Hurt locker over the weekend and I can't remember being so tense or so glued to a movie. I hope it wins many awards. Also the lead actor should get a nomination. He was wonderful.

I know it's only the Critics Choice Awards, and they nominated NINE for 10 awards, but Kathryn Bigelow just won best director!!!!! I'm very happy for her!

How much did they show James Cameron during Kathryn's acceptance speech? He was one of the first people out of his seat to applaud her. They collaborated on projects after their divorce, so they obviously don't hate each other and he's probably genuinely happy for her success. And sorry to be shallow, but I can't believe she is 58 years old! It must be excellent genes, because I think more women in Hollywood would not go around looking so lifted and Botoxed and generally freakish if they could avoid it.

Can't wait for the Globes tonight, although they're not going to tell us too much when it comes to actual Oscar wins. I find this year's Best Film race confusing and exciting at the same time. These ones seem to be candidates for the noms right now: Up in the air, The Hurt Locker, Avatar, Inglorious Basterds. What are the others? Precious? Invictus? A Single Man? Whatever happened to the buzz for (500) Days of Summer?
