I think Meryl's biggest problem is herself. She is synonymous with "greatest actress ever!"so she has to compete against her past performances. The bar is set too high for her. Everytime she has been nominated since her last win, there's always been a "better" story in that there's a new ingenue on the scene or a fellow nominee gives one of those once in a lifetime mind-blowing performances that gives them their sole Oscar.

I'm not sure she deserved it most years. Some of her later nominations aren't really worthy of winning.
Also, you have to put it in perspective. Jack Nicholson is currently the only living actor with three Oscars. There've been a few others who managed it, but they're all dead now. Among still living stars, there's nobody but Nicholson, and no women. So that shows how really, really rare it is to win a third. It never happened for Marlon Brando, Robert De Niro, or Bette Davis, for example, and with De Niro's career the way it is now, I don't expect it.

I'm so glad "Amelia"'s buzz didn't really go anywhere. The thought of three-time-Oscar-winner Hilary Swank still scares me...
ETA: I know this has nothing to do with the actual awards but I've just read what Adam Shankman has to say about the upcoming ceremony....he's announced more dancers and more dance numbers than last year, including a hip-hop number. Right. Yes, I know many viewers love dance and dance numbers but why can't the Oscars for once concentrate on the movies, especially on those nominated? I was hoping that last year's musical-loving Oscar show (in a year with no musical nominated) was only done to give Hugh Jackman something to do, but it seems that it really was the direction they're planning to go with in the future.

Oh no, does that mean a lot of Beyonce at the ceremony AGAIN?

*sigh* Fucking idiots. The Oscars really need to go back to their roots. They used to be what the Golden Globes are now: just hand out the awards and be done with it. People complain that the ceremony is too bloated, and their answer is MORE musical numbers? This is all adding to the Adam Shankman hate I developed over the last season of So You Think You Can Dance.
I'm soooooo looking forward to Beyonce yodeling out more opera numbers she doesn't have nearly have the range for.

Remember that dumb sh*t where the less prestigious winners had to give their acceptance speech in the aisle?!. I better not see that this year in favour of more dancing.

I think Kathryn Bigelow will win Best Director, especially since she just became the first woman to win at the DGA's; and the winner of that award has gone on to win best director all but a handful of times. However, I think Avatar will win Best Picture. I just don't see the Academy awarding Best Picture to a movie that only grossed 12 million dollars.
Honestly, this is probably the most win/win scenario at this point. Avatar gets recognized for the beast that it is -- and I don't have a problem with that, since the idea of Best Picture anyway is fairly subjective. And I was not of fan of either Inglorious Basterds or Up In The Air -- which seem to be only the true competition for both Avatar and The Hurt Locker.
But more importantly, KB gets to make history and become the first female to win a Best Director Oscar. (And she really really deserves it/earned it.)

I don't care what wins Best Picture if Kathryn Bigelow gets Best Director, at this point that's the award I care about most this year. It's happened far more often in recent years where the Best Director movie doesn't get Best Picture so what lpatrice said is very plausible.

According to NY Mag, Best Director at the DGAs has only differed from Best Director at the Oscars a mere six times since 1948. Good news for Bigelow.
