I think Kathryn Bigelow will win Best Director, especially since she just became the first woman to win at the DGA's; and the winner of that award has gone on to win best director all but a handful of times. However, I think Avatar will win Best Picture. I just don't see the Academy awarding Best Picture to a movie that only grossed 12 million dollars. Honestly, this is probably the most win/win scenario at this point. Avatar gets recognized for the beast that it is -- and I don't have a problem with that, since the idea of Best Picture anyway is fairly subjective. And I was not of fan of either Inglorious Basterds or Up In The Air -- which seem to be only the true competition for both Avatar and The Hurt Locker. But more importantly, KB gets to make history and become the first female to win a Best Director Oscar. (And she really really deserves it/earned it.) I'd be satisfied with this outcome. There need to be more directors like Bigelow, and fewer like Nancy "everyone is upper-middle class and white" Meyers.

I just got back from seeing The Messenger, and it's shame this movie just fell off the radar; because I liked it more than I liked The Hurt Locker. In my opinion, this picture deserves a best picture nod and Ben Foster and Woody Harrelson deserve Oscar nods for acting.

This is why I've been hesistant about seeing It's Complicated. I know writers/directors should produce what they know best about, but her movies are becoming redundant and unrealistic. The Hurt Locker was not only the best film I saw last year, but it was the best action film I saw last year. I was riveted to my seat watching it. Ironically, it took a woman to direct it.

DISTRICT 9 got a Best Picture nomination!!! Yay! I know it probably doesn't stand a chance against Avatar, but one can hope right? Not many surprises I guess, but personally, I hope Kathryn Bigelow and Jeremy Renner win.

Too bad Sharlto Copley didn't get a nomination but hey, I was happy for the Best Picture nod. I'm cheering for Kathryn Bigelow and Christoph Waltz.

Am I reading this correctly or did "Up" get both a best animated film AND best picture nom?

I hope somewhere in Paris tonight Melanie Laurent and Marion Cotillard are getting drunk on expensive champagne and cursing Harvey Weinstein for campaigning them in lead. They would have had at least a shot in supporting (especially over Cruz).
I'm not sure I want to live in a world where The Blind Side is able to get a Best Picture nomination.

I can officially state that my investment in any of the top awards is exactly zero.

I know it won't happen but I would be giddy to see an upset by Precious and have it walk away with 5 awards (Best Actress, Supporting Actress, Director, Best Picture and Best Adapted Screenplay).
