Aren't the votes already in/due? I don't get the point of the dirty campaigning now.

Well that goes a long way to explaining why all these actors-turned-directors won Oscars for directing a movie (Kevin Costner, Mel Gibson, Robert Redford etc.) on their first or second try at directing. Costner wins an Oscar in his 30s for directing and Scorsese doesn't win till his 60s? And Clint Eastwood won Best Director twice. And I bet grateful producers and execs wanted to reward their top ticket-sellers (as Costner and Gibson were in those days) for putting so many asses in seats. Scorsese never managed to do that till fairly recently. I bet if Harrison Ford (never a great actor, and never a very dynamic one either) had directed a movie in his commercial heyday he'd have an Oscar on his mantelpiece today.

Costner wins an Oscar in his 30s for directing and Scorsese doesn't win till his 60s? What's worse is that Kevin Costner was up against Martin Scorsese when he won that. You will never, EVER convince me that Dances With White Revisionist History was a better movie than Goodfellas. I scared the hell out of my friends I was yelling so loud when that happened.

Aren't the votes already in/due? I don't get the point of the dirty campaigning now. Yup, the polls closed on Tuesday. Weinstein is just a bitter old man whining about not getting what he wants. Which is Best Picture. Nine will likely only get technical awards if it gets anything, and aside from Supporting Actor and possibly Original Screenplay anything for IB is a long shot.

I'm dying laughing! That was hysterical. "Catchphrase!" "Inspiring final speech that douchebags will quote in their Facebook profiles!" "Older Actress Trying To Make A Comeback." ;D

*SNORT* That does beautifully sum up every cliche we see in Oscar films! Yet we can't help but eat it up! And the cycle continues.... So, should we go ahead put in our picks for tomorrow night? Best Actor- Jeff Bridges (though I do think Jeremy Renner could pull an upset) Best Supporting Actor- Christoph Waltz Best Actress- Sandra Bullock (not her best performance but Sandra love will probably pull through) Best Supporting Actress- Mo'Nique Best Director- Kathryn Bigelow (I will scream bloody murder if Cameron wins and I say that as someone who likes his films) Best Adapted Screenplay- Up in the Air (though I would scream with delight if District 9 pulled an upset) Best Original Screenplay- Inglourious Basterds Best Film- Avatar (sorry guys but I think it will edge out The Hurt Locker) Also, I love Love LOVE it if Star Trek or District 9 pulled an upset and beat Avatar in one of the special effects awards. The look on Cameron's face would be PRICELESS!

Smilla, those are some daring guesses: Harrelson, Mulligan, and Kendrick? Hoping for some shockers, are you? Since there's usually at least one upset, and since that usually involves Best Supporting Actress (Marcia Gay Harden over Kate Hudson, Juliette Binoche over Lauren Bacall, Marisa Tomei over.... any of the other four!), I think if there's an upset, it will be Anna Kendrick or maybe even Maggie Gyllenhaal (she's Hollywood pseudo-royalty like Gwyneth, her parents are well-connected) over Mo'Nique. Mo'Nique's refusal to play the game, schmooze, attend parties, or suck up to voters has probably lost her a number of votes. I still think she'll win, though (wouldn't it show too obviously as sour grapes if she didn't - like they're openly admitting you have to suck up if you want the gold? she threw down the gauntlet). Another mildly surprising upset could occur in the screenplay categories. I suppose just about any result could happen there as there's no real clear frontrunner I don't think. I know Tarantino is respected, but he's also won that category before. ETA: I looked it up, and the Writer's Guild awards went to Up in The Air (adapted) and The Hurt Locker (original). Which means Tarantino could and probably will lose the Oscar to Mark Boal for The Hurt Locker.
