I am completely underwhelmed by this year's Oscars. I only saw one movie, Avatar, because I had a free pass and I wanted to see a movie in IMAX 3D. Other than that I really don't care, I won't see any of the movies until they come out on DVD and are in the library.
I saw all of the nominees last year and I really thought that "Slumdog Millionaire" did NOT deserve to win at all, "The Reader" should have won by far. I think Slumdog won because the Academy wanted to appear edgy, like "let's give the Indians the Oscar this year." No thank you.
I'd like to see "The Hurt Locker" but I think I'll wait until it's at the library.

My predictions for tonight:
Best Film: Avatar (in the year they have 10 nominees in order to give crowdpleasers a chance, I don't think the Academy will award a BO flop like The Hurt Locker) Best Director: Bigelow Best Actress: Sandra Bullock Best Actor: Jeremy Renner (fangirl-y wish of course. It'll be Bridges) Best Supporting Actress: Anna Kendrick (this category is most likely to have an upset winner) Best Supporting Actor: Christoph Waltz (although I think if the upset doesn't happen in SuppActress, it could happen here, with Plummer as the winner)

I would love it if Precious won best picture but that would be too bizarre, just as long as "Up" doesn't win, I heard that sucked.
If "The Hurt Locker" wins, I"ll actually have to see it, but I"ll wait until it's in the public library, that way I don't have to pay any $$.

My picks:
Best Picture: Avatar Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow Best Actor: Jeff Bridges Best Actress: Meryl Streep* Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Plummer** Best Supporting Actress: Mo'Nique Best Song: "The Weary Kind" from Crazy Heart
* I say this as someone who would stuff the ballot box for Sandy if I could, and nobody will be happier than I if Sandy wins; however, I just have a feeling that the voters might decide it's time for Meryl's Oscar drought to end. Meryl's great, but I hope I'm wrong. ** This is one of those "Oh, geez--we forgot to give (insert name of talented, renowned, and unrecognized actor) an Oscar!" moments--it's caused upsets in the past. Jes' sayin'...
Anyone want to be morbid and guess who WON'T make the Death Montage this year? Or will they flash names and faces so fast that we'll barely be able to process any of them?

Here are my guesses for who will win and possible upsets:
Best Actor: Jeff Bridges. However I am hoping desperately there will be an upset and Colin Firth wins for A Single Man, however it's probably not likely. I also had a weird dream last night about the Oscars and Jeremy Renner won. I heard Bridges is really good in the movie and he's well respected by the community. I just hope Firth is getting more Oscar-worthy movie offers now and not stuff like What a Girl Wants material.
Best Supporting Actor: Christopher Waltz. Pretty sure bet he's going to win it. The only slight chance of an upset would probably go to Christopher Plummer but it's not going to happen.
Actress in a Leading Role: Sandra Bullock. I don't think she *should* win it but this category is pretty weak, she's well-liked, and it's probably her only chance of ever winning an Oscar. I would love for Carey Mulligan to win but she is talented and will probably be nominated again in the future.
Actress in a Supporting Role: Monique is the safe and expected win but I loved Anna Kendrick in "Up in the Air" and this is the category where there has been a lot of the WTF! so maybe like a 10% chance of an upset?
Best Director: Kathryn Bigelow. I just don't see any other possibility. Just please not James Cameron because his speech at the Golden Globes sucked.
Best Adapted Screenplay: Up in the Air. My personal pick? Nick Hornby for an An Education.
Best Original Screenplay: The Hurt Locker will probably be win but I really want Up to take it.
Best Picture: The Hurt Locker. I don't think the recent controversy with the producer is going to hurt its chances.
Animated Feature Film: Up Art Direction: Avatar Cinematography: The White Ribbon Costume Design: The Young Victoria Documentary: Burma VJ Documentary Short Subject: China's Unnatural Disaster: The Tears of Sichuan Province

Interestingly enough, this is the year (much like last year) where I don't see a lot of suprises/upsets happening. I think everything will go according to form:
Supporting Actress: MoNique Supporting Actor: Waltz Best Actress: Bullock -- but Streep may sneak in for the upset Best Actor: Bridges Best Director: Bigelow Best Pic: Avatar (As far as I am concerned best pic is between Avatar and Hurt Locker, I really can't see any other picture sneaking in for the upset, and again if the Academy stays true to form -- they won't give Best Pic to a movie that only made $12 million dollars.) I know a lot of people are predicting an Inglorious Basterds upset, which could happen but I think IB sucked, so there you go.

I picked The Hurt Locker in my Oscar pool, because I think the new scoring system favours them. But now I'm worried. Yes, I really want to win.
All my other choices align with everybody else's and Roger Ebert's.

I'm not seeing any surprises here, except for Best Picture.
Actor: Jeff Bridges Actress: Sandra Bullock Sup. Actor: Christoph Waltz (though here is where I think the upset might be. Either Plummer of Stanley Tucci, whom everyone's worked with and everyone loves, so maybe.) Sup. Actress: Monique Director: Kathryn Bigelow Original Screenplay: Quentin Tarentino Adapted Screenplay: Jason Reitman and Sheldon Turner (awkwardness alert!) and Best Picture: Avatar Like I said in it's thread, I walked out of it saying "wow!" I hadn't felt like that about a movie since Star Wars waaaay back in 1977.
Let's just hope the show is funny. I don't want to listen to the "boring!" complaints at the party tonight. Bring it, Martin and Baldwin!

I think The Hurt Locker will win best picture because Hollywood has this thing against giving science fiction movies the best picture nod and The Hurt Locker is one of those "important movies" that wins Oscars, kind of like Crap...Crash.

I think everyone is hoping for a few surprises but this could be one of those years where everything goes as planned. Which would suck.
