I think The Hurt Locker will win best picture because Hollywood has this thing against giving science fiction movies the best picture nod and The Hurt Locker is one of those "important movies" that wins Oscars, kind of like Crap...Crash. Yeah, I also took that into consideration when picking Best Picture for the Oscar pool. I think there will also be a sequel to Avatar. And I figure the Academy might give the Oscar to Cameron and company then, like they did with Lord of the Rings, if they feel it has to be honoured at some point.

The only thing that goes against The Hurt Locker winning is that the movies that beat The Fellowship of the Ring and The Two Towers were big Hollywood movies, I think A Beautiful Mind was one and Chicago was the other; The Hurt Locker isn't a Hollywood movie, meaning it doesn't have big stars in them.

I suppose another conceivable upset could be Precious for Best Pic. Bigelow for Director, Precious for pic - since it did substantially better in theaters, it made just enough money to qualify as a hit.

Well Return of the King won best picture and it had elves and hobbits in it. But it took 2 sequels before they got it. By the second sequel, the voters probably realized they'd better give it to them or there would be an uprising. I think Avatar could win, but based solely on its box-office and The Hurt Locker's lack of it. But the lack of nomination for screenplay makes me think it might not. Based on that, there does seem to be a bias against fantasy type movies.

Return of the King is the only fantasy/scifi movie I can think of that ever won a Best Pic and Best Director Oscar. This year I was just happy to see two sci-fi movies nominated for Best Pic: and I loved both of them. Still wish "Moon" could have been nom'd as well, and Sam Rockwell from that same movie. As a longtime sci-fi fan I just don't really expect those movies to win the big awards. The year ROTK and PJ swept the awards, I was so damn happy. The LOTR trilogy was just too much awesomeness to resist.
Now I've got to see The Hurt Locker!

Even though The Hurt Locker was the "obvious" choice, I was really happy to see a woman win Best Director and Best Picture. Like, happier than I expected myself to be.

I lost my Oscar pool based on the Original Screenplay. Darn, screwed up on that one. I shouldn't have believed Roger Ebert.

The screenplay and shorts categories killed my ballot, I was doing so well up until that point. I still wound up getting 18 out of 24 so that's pretty good for me.

I'm going out on a limb and calling best actor for Michael Caine in "Harry Brown".
