I'm going out on a limb and calling best actor for Michael Caine in "Harry Brown". That movie scarred me for life. Several people walked out in the middle. His performance was great, but that movie was just bleak.

I saw Winter's Bone last night. They can mail the best actor/ best supporting actor statue to John Hawkes (Teardrop) now.
Jennifer Lawrence (Ree) should get a best actress nomination, but I feel like they don't give the award to relative unknowns in this type of role- Catalina Sandino Moreno in Maria Full of Grace or Gabourey Sidibe in Precious will get the nomination, but they'll more like reward a Charlize Theron (Monster) or Halle Berry (Monster's Ball) for playing "downtrodden". It irks.

I agree, John Hawkes was amazing! I was mesmerized and frightened. And the actress who played Ree was terrific.

With ten Best Picture nominees, I think Inception and Toy Story 3 have excellent chances of getting two of those noms. Leo has a good chance right now of a Best Actor nom but that could change with the Oscar bait movies coming up.

I think with two movies that were hits with critics and viewers, Leo has a good chance at getting a nom, even though both movies were released early. He's basically Hollywood's biggest actor this year and he's been nominated before. A win is probably out of the question. Best Actor usually goes to someone in a biopic or some older respected actor who's considered "due" (like Bridges this year). Leo's still too young to win.
Has it been confirmed that they'll keep the ten Best Picture nominees?

I agree with solly. They love to nominate him, he's had three already and he's only 35. Inception might very well get nominated for Best Picture (if they are keeping it to ten) but no way it wins it. It'll clean up with the technical awards though. Unless something really mind-blowing and Avatar-like comes out, it's got the Visual Effects Oscar in the bag.

Annette Bening has been getting rave reviews for her performance in "The Kids Are All Right." Coupled with her equally great performance in the lesser known "Mother and Child" earlier this year, I think she has a good chance of getting an Oscar nomination. However Hilary Swank's "Conviction" looks really Oscar baity. Bening v. Swank round 3?

I was afraid of that happening last Oscar season but both of their Oscar bait movies kind of went nowhere then. However, as you said, Annette and "The Kids Are All Right" are already getting great reviews. And this is Annette Bening, generally underappreciated great actress so I wouldn't be surprised if they nominate her. I'm not so sure anymore about Hilary's chances at getting another nom soon. She played the lead in a biopic and didn't get anywhere near a nom. I know the reviews weren't great but this is two time Oscar winner Hilary Swank, so the Academy must like her, right? Then again, I wouldn't put it past voters to go for another round of Bening vs. Swank, just for the sake of it. ;-)

Has Julianne been getting equally good reviews? Because I could foresee the bigger problem being the actresses in the film being difficult to choose between. I concur, though, that it's gonna be a while (hopefully) before Swank gets nominated again - with two wins behind her, she's not going to just get nominated for the sake of it off a middling project (which was what was supposed to happen with Amelia, but didn't). I would love Tilda Swinton (SWINTON!) as a dark horse for "I Am Love" - seriously impressive performance - entirely in Italian, with a Russian accent.

Julianne Moore has been getting good reviews for her performance as well but the reviews I've read have consistently singled out Bening. Personally I think they should both be submitted as leads but they might cancel each other out so who knows what the studio will do.
I saw a screening of the Mark Wahlberg-Christian Bale movie "The Fighter" a couple months ago. It's not set to be released until December so I'm assuming it's vying for Oscar consideration. It's your standard biopic but I hope Christian Bale gets a nomination. He was great in it.
