Ah, Jake Ryan, sigh. I always think of this article, in which the writer discusses in depth while he believes women still love Jake Ryan (sigh). A couple of years later, he wrote this one on Lloyd Dobbler. I have to admit, I prefer Jake over Lloyd. Just because I can't figure out what exactly Lloyd was going to do with his life.

Chris Young was in "The Great Outdoors." I thought he was dreamy.
Sunnyhorse, I did not know that; I'm originally a Franklin Co. girl too! Go Mary! Jack Wagner of GH and Melrose fame is also from Wash., MO. AND I'm working on a marketing piece for work for something in Wash., MO. Wow, that all just got really weird for a second.
Back to business, kids.

I'm going to offer the unpopular opinion that all of the 80s teen comedies were commercial, fluffy crap (or commercial, crappy fluff) and don't deserve any accolades. But I do love Amadeus which in retrospect is like a teen movie set in 18th century Vienna (but more cruel because the "teen" dies.)
For the cheese factor I'm fond of 80s barbarian epics like Krull, Red Sonja, and Conan. Pecs and stilted acting a plenty.

OMG he was scary. I remember all those pin-ups of him in Tiger Beat and BOP!, and I was just terrified of his demonic eyes.
Speaking of amazing TV movies--anyone else remember "Crash Course," with Alyssa Milano?

I had to head over to IMDB to jog my memory of that guy, but now I remember. Dude has some EYEBROWS. In addition to the whole John Hughes ouevre, I enjoyed the film adaptations of SE Hinton novels: Tex, Rumble Fish, and of course, The Outsiders. I had crushes on Matt Dillon and Emilio Estevez (I still love Repo Man to this day, what an awesome film), too.

Oh, I loved Amadeus! I was like the only kid at school who actually owned the movie.
I also loved the Conan movie that had Grace Jones in it because I thought she was scary and awesome.
ETA: I just read those articles on Jake Ryan and Lloyd Dobler that kateln and I've discovered that I'm apparently very concerned with security and I have a distain for slackers. One of my biggest gripes about Lloyd was the fact that he had zero plans for his future. Jake may have been too good to be true (yeah, highly unlikely that the hot guy in high school would dump his hot blonde girlfriend for the quirky redhead in the hat) but dammit, you know Jake's parents made him go to college and he would have the connections to get a decent job.
It really isn't a money thing for me (honest!) so much as it is a "not wanting a boyfriend who just sits around on the couch all day bitching that no one is paying him to kickbox" thing.

OMG, Valley Girl! Nicolas Cage made me cry he was so beautiful in that movie. I mean, I fell in love with him at first sight. MY. GOD. He was my 80s idea of perfection. Love, love, love that movie and all the great new wave music in it.
Now when I look at him I cry for so many different reasons.

Seriously, I watch Say Anything and I find myself thinking "Diane's going to grow up to be a well respected professor, Lloyd's going to be...a kickboxer? Hmmmm."

I'm really more of a 90s kid (I was only three when the 80s departed this world), but I gotta show some love for The Karate Kid. I effing LOVE that movie. And I always thought it was incredible how Ralph Macchio did that movie, then almost ten years later did My Cousin Vinny ("I shot the clerk?") and didn't look a day older.
Wax on, wax off...
