Top Scary Movies: The Others, Carrie, and The Exorcist. What makes The Exorcist so frightening to me is that it was based on an actual case.

This Halloween cycle had me watching some good, good movies. Mostly from 2011, a shockingly svelty year for horror flicks.
The Innkeepers--I really liked this one; charming and subtle. Great dialogue. It also managed to get all the way to the end without a single moment that I would call exploitive of women, and did its thing with minimal gore. Rare for the genre. Not everyone cares for the ending, but I thought it was nicely done.
The Awakening--nice one, too: kind of like a cross between The Others and The Sixth Sense. A period drama set in a boarding school in 1921 England. Some decent scares before the twisty climax.
The Rite--genuinely well done film about modern day exorcism starring Anthony Hopkins. Probably the high water mark for this scary movie season for me; Hopkins plays an exorcism expert who tutors a skeptical almost-priest in how to perform exorcisms. It was great, really didn't pull any punches. And the ending was interesting.
Other films I wanted to watch but chickened out of: Wait Until Dark and The Pact: both of those would hit a little too close to home for me.

Session 9 which is on the Netflix streaming is very creepy. Watched this one a few years ago on Halloween night with friends. Didn't expect much from it since it included David Caruso in the cast, but it's pretty good!

Lovely Molly and The Bay are two more recent horror films that I have found were actually creepy and disturbing without being over the top gory. (Although both have their gruesome bits). The Dissolve has been linking to short horror films on the web, some old, some new for the last month or so. I really liked The Sleepover. It was clever and had a good story. Apparently they are thinking of expanding it into a feature film and I could see that. Still Life, about a town filled with mannequins that are very life like had a creepy Twilight Zone feel. Both links probably NSFW although neither is that gory.

The ball. Bouncing down the stairs. And the ball was wet.*Shudder* I KNOW, RIGHT?? I saw that movie in the theater (I'm old) and it scared the bejesus out of me. Then I saw Roger Ebert gave it a terrible review "Oooh scary! The wheelchair is at the top of the stairs! Spoooky!" Shut up Roger! A couple of years ago we got it from Netflix, and Mr. Smee confirmed that yes, it is a good movie, and yes, it was scary. However: I would totally buy and live in that house, ghost or no ghost. Ghost story and house porn. It's a win-win.

Just saw Eli Roth's new cannibal horror movie The Green Inferno.
Not for the faint of heart or stomach but if you like blackly humorous horror, this movie is amazing. A bunch of naive college students protest against deforestation in the jungle and end up in the clutches of a not-so-friendly native tribe. Great stuff.

Saw another interesting one from 2011--Absentia. Super creepy and some halfway decent dialogue before the neat-o ending.
