Well? What gets your vote? What did you go to see (or catch on the boob tube) that scared the living crap out of you?

Last House on the Left - scared me silly. Too realistic (before "real" style movies became popular). Chainsaws & stuff.

Psycho - for obvious reasons. I didn't take a shower with no one else in the house for years and years. (Reportedly, neither did Janet Leigh.)

Wait Until Dark - a blind Audrey Hepburn deals with slimy wackos and wins.

28 Days Later scared the shit out of me. Part of it is because my sadist dad made me watch the Living Dead movies as a kid so I've always been terrified of zombie movies. What was scary about 28DL, though, was that it seems as though it really could happen.

I'm sure many people will list The Ring, but that movie did nothing for me at all. I didn't find it scary and, in fact, found it to be quite boring. But to each his own, I guess.

The Exorcist gave me nightmares for years as a child. I grew up in a fundamentalist church though that believed in possession, so this movie scared the crap out of me!

Jaws. I love this movie, but it has caused me to fear the sea for most of my life.

The Ring I saw this movie over a year ago and if I start thinking of her crawling out of the TV when I'm alone and about to fall asleep, I have to go turn on the light. Creepy.

The Blair Witch Project Mostly because I can't help but wonder what the heck happened to them at the end! It started scary and just got scarier with all this random, satanic imagery.

The Shining I didn't see this until I was an adult, and it scared me then, but as a child they ran an ad with Jack Nicholson running through the snow holding an axe and I had nightmares about this ad for a long time.

Pet Semetary/b] By far the scariest book I've ever read and I reread it almost yearly and am filled with just as much dread as the first time. I couldn't read that book alone in my house at night if you paid me. The movie was nowhere near as scary, but the scenes with the little boy at the end are truly frightening.

Jeepers Creepers This move wasn't one of the scariest all around films, but there were a few really good scenes in there.

28 Days/b] I adore this movie. It's not so scary that I can never watch it again, yet it's truly disturbing. Great flick.

Wow. Reading this list, I'm a weenie! But satanic stuff really pushes my buttons.

My husband and I actually discussed turning off 28 Days Later because it was so fucking scary. We watched the whole thing, which is a shame since the ending is sorta lame.

I saw Blair Witch once in the theater and I'm never watching it again. I grew up in the country so I know what it feels like to get lost in the woods, and I really got into the Web site before I saw the movie, so I was very ready to be scared.

Has anyone seen, "House of 1,000 Corpses"? Think of Texas Chainsaw Massacre, on bad acid. I saw it a few weeks ago, I really don't think I will ever be the same.

I heard somewhere that Rob Zombie from White Zombie was involved in some way. I now fear anyone who was even peripherally involved in this blood bath.

Rob Zombie actually directed House of 1,000 Corpses and man, that movie scared me, and my sisters had fallen asleep so I was alone in the dark watching it late on Halloween.

I'm not someone who gets shocked or scared easily but recently I had the pleasure of seeing Old Boy by Chan-wook Park. I have never felt a phyiscal sensation watching a movie until then. Never felt so scared since Dale B Copper removed a letter underneath Laura Palmer's fingernail.

My top five scariest movie picks:

1) The Exorcist. More the psychological terror woven into that story, (ie; William Friedkin's exploitation of fears of the unknown and ever-present evil) than the gross, supernatural stuff, like The Spiderwalk, The Crucifix Scene, etc.

2) The Shining. Stories of familial dysfunctionality fuck me up. As do stories about insanity borne of isolation or extremity (that's why Amityville is also an extra-freaky one for me.)

3) The Sixth Sense. I was absolutely terrified by the combination of painfully creepy suspense, gloomy atmosphere and intermittent gore in this film. All the various "dead" people popping out of nowhere was not good for my nerves. The first time I watched it, I practically wet myself, even though it was on a teeny tiny little television surrounded by three friends.

4) The Mothman Prophecies. Especially the first time; there are a lot of little shockers in there. I think its atmosphere is actually spookier than The Sixth Sense.

5) The Blair Witch Project. I'm so happy to see so many other votes for this one. Maybe it's just because I'm slow, but each of the three times I've seen it, I've noticed something new and freaky about it that I didn't notice during the other viewings. And one of my Worst. Fears. Ever. is getting stranded in the woods someplace.

ETA: normally, I'm not one to draw too much attention to my mistakes, but damn. This post should be sub-headed Smilla's Worst. Edited. Post. Ever. I apologize, everyone. My brain was fried by a lot of bad news yesterday.

The Exorcist III scared the living daylight out of me. The scene with the old lady crawling on the ceiling freaked me out for days.
