I started a thread like this in the Lit forum and it seemed to do okay, so I thought I'd re-up it here. I'm one of those people who thinks a good film can't even approach perfect without a great title. (And good film titles are hard to come up with if my screenwriting friends are to be believed!) My taste in titles tends to run toward the clever and original. My favorite film title is Gus Van Sant's Elephant, which I thought for sure was a reference to the fable about the blind men of Indostan, who can't tell they're holding an elephant because they're all touching different parts of a complex beast. I thought that was a nice way of symbolizing our society's failure to recognize the different factors feeding into the school violence epidemic. This excellent article on titles, however, claims Elephant...has nothing to do with that. So...your faves?

The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension. Can you imagine that back in the day of marquees? too funny. Another too long title: The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford

Yet another entry in the Too Long category: Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. It's obscure and a bit weird but it fits the movie perfectly.

Once in a while the long names just seem to work. My personal fave: To Wong Foo Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar
However, Can Hieronymus Merkin Ever Forget Mercy Humppe and Find True Happiness?, comes in a close second. Imagine trying to fit that on the marquee. This one had Joan Collins as a character named Polyester Poontang. I have no idea why it didn't get an Oscar nod.

Hee, cool topic. I can't really contribute since we get different film titles most of the time and even more often they don't make sense at all or are completely false translations of the original title. Sometimes they give the films other English titles. For example, "Bend it like Beckham" was released as "Kick it like Beckham".

I've always liked Help! I'm A Fish just because it's silly!

Love that one!
Even though I've never seen it, the movie title Faster Pussycat, Kill, Kill is awesome.

These are some of my favorites.
I Love You, Alice B. Toklas
Dirty Mary, Crazy Larry
Nude for Satan
They Saved Hitler's Brain
The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed-Up Zombies
Nude for Satan was every bit as bad as its title suggests.
