Hee, a Yogi Berra-ism. I understand that sentiment though because Westerns are about taking the herd to Abilene, living down a fast-gun reputation, waiting for the killer to arrive on the noon train, saving the local townsfolk from the evil landgrabbing city slickers from back East and any other Western cliche you can think up. Just as there's no crying in baseball, there are no love stories in Westerns. But, hey, John Wayne DIED in the middle of a Western, and that wasn't ever supposed to happen, so I guess Western fans should have been prepared for anything. All I'm trying to say here is that it is possible to have no interest in BBM for reasons other than raging homophobia.

Sarah Jessica admitted on Conan to not having seen BBM until her son wanted to see it (she had already casted her vote). But she fastforwarded through the "nasty" bits. Preschoolers are interested in Brokeback Mountain?

I thought that was odd too. My guess is he was interested in the horses and the sheep.

Or, you know, given that daddy is Matthew Broderick, maybe he wanted to see the story of how a gay man is trapped in a marriage to a woman portrayed onscreen.

Let me add what's left of my .02 to the discussion. I saw both Crash and BBM and while I liked both movies I think in the long run the movie that will wear better is Good Night and Good Luck. It dealt with a serious subject and according to friends of mine who have seen the film it was beautifully acted and filmed.

This is the biggest problem. The best picture race turned into BBM versus Crash. And it should have been Crash vs. BBM, Capote, Good Night and Good Luck, and Munich. Of those five films, my opinion is that Crash was not the best one.

Sheesh. I am still *so* bummed about BBM being snubbed - maybe it's because I'm from Texas, I love cowboys or just that the movie seemed like it had the most *genuine* heart and soul. I even had a dream last night that it was playing in a crowded theater to a bunch of suburbanites who said, 'Wow. THAT should have won Best Picture." I think it's crazy, but I developed a sincere sentimental attachment to that picture. I haven't seen Crash but, seriously, it sounds like a frickin TV movies. Shame on you, Academy.
How close do you think it was? Do you think it came down to 50 votes or less?

So even though I thought Crash sucked, I still think the BBM supporters come across as sore losers, unwilling to admit that it's possible for other human beings to think BBM was not the best movie of the year and not be a raging homophobe. I didn't think BBM was bad, but I didn't think it was the best movie to come out this year (nor even the best of the best picture nominees). I thought the film looked lovely, had a good storyline and Jake Gyllenhaal did a good job, but that some of the other parts were miscast and it dragged along in a lot of places. Yet if you look at the reaction on some sites, you'd never know that that AMPAS gave BBM the most nominations of the year and, in the end, the most Oscars. Instead, some sites are acting like AMPAS dug up Matthew Shepard's body and displayed it on the Oscar stage for all to see. As a BBM supporter, I respectfully disagree. I don't have a problem with those who've seen the film and didn't like it as much as I did or hated it, because at least those people have bothered to see it. My beef is with Academy members/morons like Tony Curtis and Ernest Borgnine, who not only haven't seen it and have no intention to, they brag about it! If they had said that about Crash or Munich, they would've caught Hell for it and rightfully so. Any doubt I've had about the AMPAS' homophobia is gone. While I don't think that BBM's losing the Oscar for Best Picture is one of the greatest tragedies of all time, I do believe that the bigotry behind why it didn't is. As far as I'm concerned, any Academy member who thinks that kind of ignorance is something to be proud of shouldn't be a member anymore.

Wait, aren't AMPA members have to be at least nominated to be in? Maybe Sarah Jessica Parker was talking about the SAG awards?

This post is not to take anything away from Crash's win. This is just idle conjecture.
I wonder if the Scientology voting bloc didn't hurt Brokeback Mountain's chances. Since Scientology is so against homosexuality, I wonder if Scientologist members refused to see it as well. I can't see Tom "I LUV THE WOMEN" Cruise viewing or voting for BBM.
Also, Paul Haggis, fellow Scientologist, wrote the screenplay and directed Crash. I wonder if other Scientologists are more likely to vote for their Scientology buddies. As a Scientologist Academy Award Winner might be considered proof that Scientology works and it does help your career by the culties.
I wonder how many Scientologists belong to the Academy?
