Tom & Lorenzo made a point of how hard Eddie Redmayne campaigned this season. If he were a woman he'd be seen as Anne Hathaway 2.0, buuuuuuut that's another story. Anyway - to me it seems less anti-Keaton and more symptomatic of how the Academy rewards people who play the game.

"Campaigning" has a bad name, and yes, some of it is sleazy, but I would have liked to hear more from Keaton. Like I said, I have no idea what he's been up to for the past 20 years. I almost forgot he was in the Oscar race at all. It would have helped a lot if he'd gone on a few talk shows and talked about his comeback and how he wound up in this movie. JK Simmons was hardly shoving himself down anyone's throats, but he hosted SNL and that put him on my radar (especially because he did a good job and he was funny).

Honestly, I think Keaton probably just doesn't care that much. I think he's been enjoying the attention but I never got the impression that winning awards was a big deal for him. We're probably more annoyed about him losing than he is.
He has a ranch in Montana where he spends most of his time. Esquire had an interview with him last year long before Birdman came out, and he seemed pretty well settled out there.

I do the AMC Theaters Best Picture Showcase marathon every year, so having seen every movie, I feel very comfortable in saying that "boyhood" was roooooooooobbbbbbbbbbbbbbed. This is almost "Crash" levels of WTF for me.
(I acknowledge that movie enjoyment is totally subjective so I'm not going to flip the fuck out if anyone disagrees with me. But I thought Boyhood exemplified artistry and pushed the boundaries of film. Birdman was good, but Hitchcock did the single camera shot thing 50 years ago and it was too Hollywood.)

Boyhood bored me almost to tears, I'm glad I saw it at home because I never would've last long enough to see all 2 hours and 45 minutes of it in the theater. It never really went beyond the gimmick for me. It's a fine gimmick, but it is a gimmick.

If I were giving out awards, my faves would be "Selma", "Belle" "Grand Budapest Hotel" and "Live, Kill, Die". Between "Boyhood" and "Birdman", I'd choose "Boyhood". As for Eddie- yes, he showed up at every event, but I thought he gave the best performance out of everyone nominated...... I had no issue with him winning.
It does piss me off someone chose to film Michael Keaton putting something in his pocket. No need to pile on.
I think Michael probably was fine with whatever happened, but when everyone and their brother comes up to you for weeks on end saying there's no justice unless you win, it's got to mess with your head a bit. I'm sure he was incredibly disappointed his name wasn't called, but hopefully, the sting is going away and he gets some kick-ass roles in the near future.

I'll be nice and call it a "concept" rather than a "gimmick" but yeah...I thought the movie itself was forgettable, kind of pointless, and often full of cliches (you knew both of those stepfathers were going to be abusive as soon as they came onscreen). And I thought Patricia Arquette's acting was over the top at times, though I don't begrudge her the Oscar because I didn't feel like she wuzrobbing someone else. But at least Boyhood was pleasant enough to watch - I hated Grand Budapest Hotel so much I can't even put it into words. I watched Bottle Rocket in college and became such a huge Wes Anderson fan, but he can pack his shtick into an adorable vintage steamer trunk and take a smoke-billowing choo-choo train straight to hell.

Boyhood for the win! I'm so disappointed it didn't win. I think it will hold up over time though... it speaks to so many different people in so many different ways.
