I thought Jim's performance was good enough for a nomination, but I was glad he didn't get one because I didn't want Mel Gibson is Insane (the other place's nickname for PotC) to get any major Oscar nods. I'm somewhat ashamed to admit that I'm seriously looking forward to Apocalypto. They've apparently pushed it back to December to position it for an Oscar campaign. Even if I love the movie, I'll be rooting against that too because of a lingering distaste for Braveheart being a Best Picture winner. The whole 95 awards were screwed up. The best picture of the year ( Dead Man Walking) wasn't even nominated. No Ian McKellen. Nick Cage has Sean Penn's award. Mira Sorvino stole Kate Winslet's award.

I just watched Sexy Beast and was, again, floored by the performances in that movie - especially Ray Winstone's sweet turn as a retired gangster (you can see the menace and danger of the former criminal but it is completely overridden by this amazing love he has for his wife and the life they have built for themselves) and Ben Kingsley's frightening performance as a psychopathic gangster who taps Winstone for one final job. I love that Jim Broadbent won the Supporting Actor Oscar (over Kingsley) that year, but I feel that Broadbent's performance in Iris was pretty much on par with most of his other (excellent) performances while Kingsley created something truly amazing - his performance is this strange mixture of pathetic and extremely scary and it is riveting. So, while I love that Jim Broadbent has an Oscar, I wish it had been for something other than Iris.

After finally watching Capote and Brokeback Mountain, I wish they had given it to Heath LEdger. I couldn't believe I got that moved by Heath Ledger. Have any of ya'll listened to Capote in loud surround sound? The slobbery lisping just overshadowed everything. I can't imagine that it was any different in the theater. I'm sorry, I love Hoffman so much, but that was completely distracting. I was so disappointed. On the other hand, the surround sound helped you in hearing half of what Heath Ledger said in that mumbly voice. ETA: I won't even touch on Crash winning over Brokeback Mountain. I thought Crash was a decent fluffy movie. The last image of Brokeback was one of the most powerful images I've ever seen. Ok, I guess, I touched on it

The last 10 minutes of BB, is the only part of the movie that elevates it into greatness. The film was a disappointment to me, because I liked the short story so much. As for the Oscar nominees only Munich and Capote are in my Top 10 of last year.
Somewhat unpopularly, I think Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World should've won Best Picture over The Return of the King.

Yes! A thousand times yes! I love Jim Broadbent as well but, Sir Ben was bloody brilliant in Sexy Beast.

Johnny Depp's performance in Ed Wood should have won him on Oscar, or at the very least a nomination, imo.

Eric Bana should have gotten an Oscar for Troy. He stole that movie and he also gave a good performance too.

Eric Bana should have gotten an Oscar for Troy. He stole that movie and he also gave a good performance too. I would agree since I love the Bana, but bad writing and Brad Pitt's stoner surfer sounding Achilles ruined that film so much that even the wonder of Eric couldn't salvage it. Which sucks because all the crapola of the film took away from the attention he should have been receiving.

I peresonally think that Peter O'Toole should've gotten and Oscar nom for Troy, if only for the scene when he goes to Achilles and begs for Hector's body. It's so depressing that such a great actor was involved in that mess.

Eric Bana should have at least gotten an Oscar nomination for Munich. He was amazing in that movie.
