I saw King Kong for the first time last night, and while I didn't think a lot of the movie itself, I do believe that George Clooney should get that Oscar over to the Ape as fast as possible. Far more range than Mr. Clooney can ever dream of having.

After rewatching The Motorcycle Diaries last night, I still feel that Rodrigo de La Serna should've been nominated for a "best supporting actor" Oscar last year. His performance was brilliant. Not only did he catch the subtleties of Alberto Granada's accent and personality (Granada's from a more isolated region in Argentina and therefore has a very distinctive Spanish accent), but made what would've been an annoying and overblown flirt into someone genuinely likeable. Anyhow, back to the Crash vs. BBM debate! No! No! Not back to the debate yet! I just saw The Motorcycle Diaries for the first time last night. I loved it. My Spanish isn't good enough to pick up differences in Argentinian accents, but I was really struck by Rodrigo de la Serna's performance. It overshadowed every one elses' in the movie. Now, I'm off to IMDb to look up his profile... I should check this thread more often! Well, if it makes you feel any better Kandig (it certainly made ME feel better), he DID win "best newcomer" at the independent spirit awards. He wasn't there to accept - I'm not sure if he had other commitments, or if he was too shy about his English - so pocket-sized hotness (TM someone from the "other site" so long ago) Gael Garcia Bernal did accept for him. I do believe that part of the reason he wasn't nominated for the Oscar was potentially because of the subject content, but that's for another thread.

"Blame Canada" from the South Park movie totally should have won Best Song over that bland piece of crap from Tarzan. Also, Matt and Trey should have been nominated for Best Original Screenplay.

Okay, I know it was mostly all made/lit with computers and the Academy hates Rodriguez for the DGA debacle, but -- Sin City for cinematography over Memoirs of a Geisha a zillion times over. The "look" of the film was just stunning, innovative and brilliant. The latter? Pretty but not so much with the other stuff.
Or maybe the other, better Ziyi Zhang film for best cinematography -- 2046 is pure poetry in some scenes and Christopher Doyle is one of the best DPs around, maybe one of the best of all time.
Haven't seen Motorcycle Diaries, but I know it was a film that was rendered ineligible for foreign film due to the Academy's stupid, draconian rules (basically because it was a co-production between the US and other countries, it's not a "foreign" film -- WTF? Same thing happened to Very Long Engagement). Maybe that had something to do with the lack of nominations? The company was going to push for best foreign film and when they couldn't, they had some trouble drumming up support?

A thousand time WORD! That movie was darn near brilliant.
Personally, I thought it was hilarious that so much of the controversy about the SP movie revolved around the amount of foul language. That was the point of the whole darn movie!

I just finished rewatching Bridget Jones's Diary and I just have to say that Hugh Grant deserved a nomination if not a bloody win for his turn as Daniel Cleaver. He is just so awesome, sexy and funny and does it all without even trying. Judging from other versions of the Pride and Prejudice story, it is extremely difficult to cast the Wickham character (the pretend good guy who you KNOW is a cad but you want to believe he is really a decent guy hiding heartbreak) and Hugh Grant was perfect.
Plus, I just think Hugh Grant is an excellent actor who has been ignored by the Academy for ages now (maybe it is the fallout from the Divine Brown incident or maybe it is the good ol' bias against comedy). He has deserved, imo, at least 2 nominations in his career, possibly 3.

Hugh really played the loveable cad perfectly in Bridget Jones Diary. He definitely deserved a nod for his performance in About A Boy. He was perfect. Actually, Rachel Weisz and Toni Collette were amazing in this movie as well.

I just watched The Doors on tv the other day and Val Kilmer. My god totally robbed, same boat as Johnny Depp as far as I'm concerned.

You speak the truth. How about the beauty of In the Mood for Love? Or Hero? Unfortunately, while his cinematography will always be noted by the better reviewers, the Oscars seems destined to overlook him because he works mainly in Asian cinema which rarely resonates with the Academy. Pity because he will probably end up being one of the most imitated cinematographers around. Oh well, it's not the first time and it won't be the last that the Academy overlooks the innovators. On the subject of original song, I really wish that they had nominated So Long and Thanks for All the Fish which was a really witty number set to a piece of old-style stage music (if that makes sense). Oh and Hugh Grant in Bridget Jones- my favourite performance from him. But I wouldn't have given him the win that year. I would still have gone with Jim Broadbent, but for Moulin Rouge instead of Iris.

This may belong in the unpopular opinion thread, but since I re-watched The Passion of the Christ this past Easter/Passover weekend, I am annoyed all over again Jim Caviezel did not even get a nod. Makeup aside, the mans eyes alone did more acting IMO than Jamie Foxx will ever be able to do.
Like I said, unpopular probably, but no scourging please mmkay?
