Agreed, but I think he has to share it with Miss Teshmacher and Otis. I saw it again just last week and they were both great fun to watch. No wonder I'd no interest whatsoever in Lois with those three buzzing around.
John T. Reilly in Chicago. It was like he was in a different movie to the rest of them. They were all being so "Broadway musical" all over the place (which I don't blame them for at all), but then he was just playing it so straight and honest and I just felt so bad for him. I don't remember the name of his song - Mr. Invisible or something? But it was really affecting. He was in a different league.
And has nobody mentioned Robert Duvall in To Kill a Mockingbird? OK, it was a lot to do with great directing working in his favour in *that* scene - that camera was allowed to really linger on him. But still, you need to really have talent to pull it off without being over the top. He could so easily have just pulled a plaintive puppydog expression and it would have just looked cloying.

I never really thought about this because I thought Renee Zellweger, CZJ, Gere, Latifah and Reilly were all very good, but Reilly really does have this extra level of pathos that makes his relatively small and completely unshowy role stand out. I mean, the guy has a song about how he fades into the background (Mr. Cellophane) and he still manages to steal every scene he is in without even trying. I do think the film was set up that way, though, with Reilly being this honest, moral (yet a little slow on the uptake) center, but not many actors could have pulled it off with such sweet understatement while every other actor was putting everything and the kitchen sink into his/her role.

Oooh....
John Hannah in The Mummy and The Mummy Returns. He was brilliant in both those movies.
Jay and Silent Bob in all the Kevin Smith flicks.
Allison Janney in Drop Dead Gorgeous. Everyone was great in that movie, but Allison got all the really funny lines.

While The Lords of Dogtown isn't the best movie of all time, it does have its moments, mostly because of Heath Ledger. Like in Brokeback Mountain, HL's accent was so convincing to me, I find it hard to believe he's Australian.

Given the death of the late, great Bruno Kirby, this thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning his scene-stealing performances in The Godfather, Part 2 ,City Slickers, Good Morning, Vietnam, The Freshman and When Harry Met Sally.

Allison Janney in Drop Dead Gorgeous. Everyone was great in that movie, but Allison got all the really funny lines. Loretta: Can one of yous boys give me a ride home? Annette Atkins: Don't fall for it. She lives two trailers down. Loretta: So? Be real easy. Loretta: Best damn tapper, most smartest. Annette Atkins: Most smartest? Loretta: Most smartest! ( Ellen Barkin was damn funny in that movie too!)

Drop Dead Gorgeous has some freaking AMAZING moments. Especially by Alison Janey. She just plays trailer trash wonderfully, and so did Ellen Barkin. It's also one of the most quotable movies ever.
"I told you I'd move the car if I cripple came along!"
"And the next thing you know - KABLOOIE - I'm ass up in someone's flower bed!"
"What's sick is women dressing like men!" "Oh, you betchya, Iris!"

I know! I could quote from that movie all day!
"MOM!! Mom, Mom, MOM!" "Are you a relative?" "No, asshole, she's yellin' 'Mom mom mom!' 'cos she's got Tourettes! She's Annette's daughter, you dipshit!"
"My mom never hid the fact that my dad chose his career over us. What was it she always said?" "Once a carnie, always a carnie."
"Amber, the woman clung to your tap shoes while she was flying through the air like a lawn dart!"
