Adam Driver in "This is Where I Leave You". It's IMO an overly predictable and staid dramedy, though the performances are good. But Driver just comes in and brings in this much-needed sense of chaos into the proceedings and it's as if all the scenes he's in come to life and everyone lights up in his interactions with him. In the audiocommentary on the film (it's a comfort watch for me, shut up... ) the director is so giddy pointing out all the hilarious random stuff Driver does that was apparently ad-libbed and enlivens proceedings. So at least he knew not to get in the way of that. He was still at the beginning of his career then, but you could see how charismatic and talented he is already. Also funny, he needs to do more comedy. I just rewatched that recently when it popped up on HBO Max. I remember seeing it in the theaters before I knew who Adam Driver was and I was so drawn to his character. He played the youngest child perfectly and his goofball personality played off the three straight man characters (Jason Bateman, Tina Fey, and the other brother). In fact, I really only rewatched it because of him, I didn't think it was that great a movie otherwise, my undying love for Jason Bateman aside. I liked it more on the rewatch, but Rose Byrne's character is still as out of place as I remember. I also had to look up who played Horry because he was just so gorgeous (it's Timothy Olyphant, who's never really been on my radar, but he was extremely attractive in this role.) Definitely a mediocre movie, but the basketball scenes with Phillip Seymour Hoffman just kill me. I still yell out "make it rain" when I mess something up really badly.

I was mad when I first saw that movie for making PSH say the word, "shart." That's just wrong. I was angry that they put Philip Seymour Hoffman in the movie in the first place, they clearly wanted Jack Black for that role.

It kind of elevated the role to have PSH playing the role of Jack Black though. It was a dead-on impersonation, but somehow funnier to me coming from someone other than Jack Black himself. I miss Philip Seymour Hoffman, he was so talented.

CW: cancer, swearing, bad movie adaptations of video games I just thought of another scene stealer from a deeply talented and sadly departed actor: Raúl Julia as M. Bison in Street Fighter. It’s a terrible movie and Julia’s last movie before his untimely death from stomach cancer, but he gave the role his all and almost saves the movie. Double Toasted highlighted his performance in their Bad Movie Review, it’s worth a watch. Descansa en paz, Raúl. And, fuck cancer!

Raul Julia in Street Fighter is an amazing performance. And for such a terrible movie, "but for me it was Tuesday" is a legitimately great movie line.
I really love performances where you can tell the actor knows they're in a silly movie and decides to just go hog wild with what they've got. Stanley Tucci in The Core, Alan Rickman in Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves, Uma Thurman in Batman and Robin, Jeremy Irons and John Malkovich in The Man in the Iron Mask come to mind.

CW: plagiarism, cancer, more swearing
That line is a steal from the movie Conan the Barbarian, but Raúl made that line his own!
And now I’m sad about Alan Rickman again.
Seriously, fuck cancer!
