This was one of my favorite threads over at the other place.
Whether you loved "hot" Jordan (as I did), young Joey-Joe Joe-Bird, "bad boy" (Homeboy) Donnie, quiet Jon, or ugly Danny, this thread's for you.
Discuss.

For all my love of boybands and cheese-wad pop, I always hated New Kids. They had awful voices and their songs weren't even good ear crack!
That doesn't mean, however, that my Christmas isn't complete without a little "Kick that ballistic Santa Claus!"

I was the 12-15 girl demographic their PR machine targeted, and I'm proud to say that I never fell for the hype. Oh, I got ear-wormed like the rest of the continent, but I never bought any music or swag, never thought of them as much more than joke fodder. Pity the girls who proclaimed their NKOTB love in my hearing. I pulled my eye muscles from all the rolling.
One of my best friends didn't need wallpaper in her bedroom--the scores of (mostly Joey) posters hid every inch of paint. I used to give her so much crap about NKOTB. Bad friend, Foxy! But sometimes funny is better than nice, right snarkers?
I'm SO glad my natural cynicism saved me from that vortex of suck. Now I can hold my head high while my peers hang their heads and confess the extent of their former NKOTB madness. My other pop-mania avoidance claims to fame include thinking Michael Jackson was wierd even during the Thriller era, and telling everyone who would listen that there was no way those Milli Vanilli guys were doing their own singing MONTHS before the truth broke.
Why yes, I AM smug about my pop-hype resistence powers. Just give me this small thing, Lord knows I don't have much else to be smug about.

You just described 13-14 year old me. I wouldn't go anywhere near these guys because of all the cheese (and yet in college, the Spice Girls were my dirty, little, not-exactly-a-secret).
In 9th grade, my best friend loved them. Her favorite was Jonathan mostly because he looked like her boyfriend, who was named...Jonathan. Being a good friend, I actually got up at the crack of dawn one weekend and stood in line with her for tickets (back when people still did that) - they actually had all of us who got there early pull numbers, I pulled the lowest number and scored her 5th row center tickets. She offered to buy me a ticket and I absolutely refused. Her boyfriend went instead and heckled the New Kids the whole time, so she didn't speak to him for two days.
Man, and the swag was out of control. I remember stopping by the house of a girl who was more of an acquaintance to pick something up and staring in horror at her NKOTB bed sheets.
I saw these guys on "I Love the 80s" over the weekend and man - Danny really was ugly. He looked like ape-boy. But who knew that Donnie would go on to be a fairly decent actor?

I fell for the hype. Yes, I admit it. And I was in love with Joey. My smugness came from making fun of all those in love with Jordan and his castrati voice (yes, Barry Gibb did it too, but that's different-- Barry was sexy). I only bought the tapes, none of the swag, though. So that's something to be proud of.

Well, tinyshoes, at least you had the good sense to make fun of some parts. I swear, the die-hard fans were like a scary cult! They wouldn't even admit that Danny was the fugliest fug that ever fugged. As if that's up for debate. It's more easily proved than this existence of gravity!
I'm woman enough to admit that Donnie is actually a pretty good actor. (He's great in Band of Brothers--and it's so chock-full of goodness that even saying an actor holds his own is saying something.) I'm nearly paralyzed from the shock of realizing that something good (besides snark) came from NKOTB. I think I need a drink..."Oh, Pooooooool Boy!"

I loved NKOTB when I was about ten, then I grew out of it in like a year or so. I had maybe one poster, and a tape, MAYBE a small pin, and that was it.
Although I like watching their BTM and THS. They completely make fun of themselves, so it's worth it.
I still couldn't believe that was Donnie in Sixth Sense. I didn't even know it was him until the THS, and then I was like, "No fucking WAY!"

They (meaning Jordan) were my first celebrity crushes. I was something like five years old. Although I liked Jordan I had the Joey doll. It's funny because Joey was so young and skinny but his doll was buff.
