Because I firmly believe if you have to hide the plot, you're probably also hiding a shitty movie. (There are exceptions...but the difference between something like this and something like Inception is that Inception is difficult to summarize for a commercial or even a conversation, but never says "don't let anyone spoil it for you!" And even if they did spoil it for you, you still have to see it for yourself to get the full effect.)

So, I found out the plot, and...meh. I'm not that impressed. I'm not saying it would be a bad movie. Many good movies are often by-the-numbers, but I don't think that it's so clever that they couldn't have explained a little more in the commercial or acted like it's so shocking that you should go in 'clean'.

Ditto. I looked it up on Wikipedia, and it seems really obvious and dull. I had no intention of seeing it anyway. The trailer makes it looks like some faux documentary horror movie, I got a huge ripping-off-The-Blair-Witch-Project from it. I was wrong about that aspect but I'm even less inclined to see it than I was before.

And the filmmakers seem like pretentious art school d-bags.

They are - Someone at a Sundance Q&A suggested that Catfish wasn't a strict "documentary" and the filmmakers responded like total assholes (mildly spoilery, of course) - and I concur that anyone with a passing familiarity with Encyclopedia Dramatica/Fandom Wank wouldn't find the twist shocking at all.

Drop Dead Gorgeous is AMAZING!! Lona Williams, who wrote the screenplay (and also played the mute blond judge from Lehman furniture) doesn't have any IMDB credits after 2002. I really wish she'd write something else.

Yeah I saw it and was actually really disappointed. I kept hearing about this awesome twist that would blow my mind and it was exactly what I would expect from a "documentary" about an online relationship. How, in this day and age, is the twist shocking? Its not and I was really let down by the hype. I really disliked the three main guys. I hope it wasn't real. I didn't go into the movie thinking it was supposed to be the truth. We're actually supposed to think its real then? Because if that is so then I want to kick those filmmakers in the teeth.

Heh. Finally saw Catfish. It was actually not bad, although it could be that I felt that way because I went into it (thanks to this thread) not expecting anything like a twist.
