I got back from America (my first trip abroad!) on Thursday to hear this. So sad. I always loved Scotty. James seemed like he was having fun with the role, and that episode of TNG when they recreated the original bridge of the Enterprise had me in tears.
I remember reading an interview with him when he mentioned the missing part of his finger and how he'd thought it was silly to hide it when he was playing Scotty. After all, the guy was an engineer and accidents happen.
RIP, Scotty.
