Jon Hamm. Tour guides at my alma mater love to ask people to guess what the highest-earning undergraduate major is at the University of North Carolina. The correct answer is cultural geography--because that's what Michael Jordan majored in. (He left school early for the NBA but came back during the summers to finish his degree.) One of my favorite pieces of trivia about a celeb and education is that Ken Jeong (of The Hangover fame, and Senor Chang on Community) went to undergrad at Duke and has an MD from UNC. He did his residency in internal medicine. And now he dresses up as black-face elves on TV.

Mayim Bialik from Blossom and The Big Bang Theory has a PhD in Neuroscience. And Danica McKellar from The Wonder Years has a summa cum laude BS in mathematics from UCLA. She co-authored a scientific paper with a classmate and their professor resulting in what is known as the Chayes-McKellar-Winn theorem and has authored several books (that my daughter LOVES!) about mathematics aimed at middle- and high-school-aged girls who tend to lose interest/become intimidated in higher-level mathematics in secondary school. She's a hero in our house.

Heh. I took a look at McKellar's books once and wasn't that impressed. I just couldn't imagine learning math from a book like that; it looks way too 'busy', for lack of a better word. I flipped through the pages and thought, "Dude, so much filler!" Then again, I was always a pretty good math student (not awesome at it like Danica, but I did love algebra and geometry) who did well with traditional textbooks, so I'm probably not the target demographic anyway. I remember reading about this, and I thought, "Figures that the Asian guy used to be a doctor!" Heh. Guess that some stereotypes are stereotypes for a reason.... And then I mentioned this to a friend and she said, "Yeah, but then he left medicine to go into acting. That wasn't very Asian of him at all." (What? We're Asian, we can say this sort of shit and get away with it. )

Speaking of Community, the fictional Greendale community college on the show has erected a statue to Luis Guzman, because on the show he is their most famous graduate. In real life, he had worked with Community's director on a movie, and was flattered and honored to have the statue of himself on Community.
Actors might not expect their schools to erect statues on their behalf, but I think the schools benefit from the name recognition of their famous students. Plus, they probably hope for all kinds of cash gifts from them, too.

Any mention of James Franco in this thread just makes me think of that awesome pic of him asleep in class.

She's just the right age--although as incognito so correctly points out, if she's already a math nerd, this may seem like overkill. Take a look at "Math Doesn't Suck" and see what you think. Ds1 is an excellent math student, but it's not her favorite subject and her grades have been slipping of late. I think we need to reread "Hot X--Algebra Revealed" again to get her back on track. Topic: I admire any celebrity--especially athletes--who go back and complete their degrees after achieving success in their chosen fields. The ones who come to mind are Emmett Smith, Kristin Chenoweth, and *gulp* Carrie Underwood.

How 'bout some highly educated rock stars? Greg Graffin from Bad Religion "obtained his Ph.D. at Cornell University and has lectured courses in life sciences and paleontology at the University of California, Los Angeles." Flea from RHCP went back to school at USC for music theory. I know there's more. I think one of the dudes from Weezer went to Harvard.

Yeah, Rivers Cuomo from Weezer went to Harvard. I remember reading that he ate in the cafeteria and went to dorm parties (which is actually a little creepy, considering he has always been rumored to have a thing for young girls).
