My favourite star-you-wouldn't-peg-as-a-scholar is Dolph Lundgren: He has a master's degree in chemical engineering from the University of Sydney and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1983, but he quit after two weeks to pursue acting.

Has anyone mentioned Cindy Crawford yet? She was discovered at age 16 by a newspaper photographer and signed with the Elite agency out of Chicago while earning straight As in high school. She graduated valedictorian of her high school class and earned a full scholarship to study chemical engineering to Northwestern University, but only attended one quarter before deciding to pursue the modeling career.

Yeah, this one always makes my eyes bulge out every time I see someone mention it. Partly because he was going for chemical engineering, partly because it was MIT, partly because he got a Fulbright scholarship, and partly because he gave it all up to act opposite Sylvester Stallone.

Don't forget training in kickboxing and karate and hanging out with Grace Jones [which is training of some kind all by itself].

Laura Linney graduated from Brown University with a BA in Drama and then graduated from Juilliard in Drama in 1990. I have to admire someone who clearly wanted to be an actor from such a young age and studied and learned as much as they could in that field. She also gave the commencement speech to Juiliard a couple years ago and you can really feel the love she has for the school in her speech.

Laura Linney is one of my favorite actresses! I would love to have coffee with her.

Oh yeah! Dolph Lundgren!! That is one of my favorite factoids to use to blow people's minds in real life. I also really liked seeing Dolph on I Love the 80s, talking about Ivan Drago - he seemed to have a sense of humor about it. "Yeah, Ivan was a juicer!"

Eh, I can't fault Dolph for going into acting. He did it because he thought it was fun--and it's probably much more fun than chemical engineering.
